Key West has very little natural sand. The reef offshore keeps out the waves that grind coral into beaches, and local guide Cool Key West says most of the island's beach sand is hauled in by the resorts. So only a handful of hotels have a beach of their own. For the biggest, book Casa Marina – Hilton calls its 1,100 feet the largest private beach in Key West. For sand that's natural, book The Reach.

Those are entry-level nightly rates outside the winter peak, before resort fees – Pier House's daily fee, for example, covers its beach attendants and umbrellas. All six have a beach on the property. Few Key West hotels can say that, so this grid has six rows, not seven. The beachfront resorts hub runs the same test across Florida and the Caribbean.
Which Key West beachfront resort should you book?
For most travelers, book Casa Marina. It has the most sand of any hotel on the island, in Old Town on the Atlantic side. Its two oceanfront pools split into family and adults-only areas, so it works for both. Check Casa Marina availability early – winter is peak season.
For the same Old Town setting closer to Duval Street, book The Reach. For the best value on the sand, book Southernmost Beach Resort. For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book a cottage on Sunset Key.

Does Key West have good beaches?
Not many, and most of the sand is imported. Cool Key West explains that the barrier reef puts the Keys in protected waters, without the wave action that breaks coral and rock into sand. Most beach sand on the island is hauled in and replaced after storms.
For swimming, go to Fort Zachary Taylor. Florida State Parks says its water is shallow but deep enough to swim and snorkel, and the Florida Keys tourism board calls it the best beach in Key West. For calm water, Higgs Beach – the city describes wide sand and calm, shallow water. Smathers is the largest public beach, about half a mile on the Atlantic side.

Margaritaville Beach House is across the road from the beach. The hotel's own site says it sits across from Smathers Beach, on the far side of South Roosevelt Boulevard. Book it for the price, not for sand outside your room.
In Old Town, on the Atlantic
Casa Marina Key West
The beach booking. Casa Marina is a 1920s landmark with 311 rooms on more than 1,100 feet of sand – the largest private beach in Key West, per Hilton. It reopened in 2023 after a renovation and is now part of Hilton's Curio Collection.
There are two oceanfront pools, with separate family and adults-only areas. Higgs Beach is nearby.

The Reach Key West
Natural sand. The Reach calls its beach the only private natural sand beach in Key West. Like Casa Marina, it's a Curio Collection hotel, but closer to the restaurants and bars of Duval Street.
It's smaller, with about 150 rooms, and has a pool alongside the beach.

Southernmost Beach Resort
The value pick. Southernmost Beach Resort sits at 1319 Duval Street, on South Beach near the Southernmost Point. Its own site lists two beaches and three heated pools.
The minimum check-in age is 21, per Expedia, so it suits couples and friends more than families.

At the top of Duval Street
Pier House Resort and Spa
The sunset side. Pier House sits at 1 Duval Street, near Mallory Square. Its fact sheet lists a private white-sand beach with a floating dock, beach attendants and umbrellas.
Three Palms Beach Bar is on the sand. There are 142 rooms.

Off the main island
Sunset Key Cottages
The splurge. Sunset Key is a private island a short boat ride from Key West, and these 40 cottages come with kitchens and their own private beach.
The ferry leaves Opal Key Resort every 30 minutes from 6:45 to 22:45, then runs on request, and it's included for registered guests.
Expect around $1,300 a night or more. Book this one for a honeymoon or a milestone, when quiet matters more than Duval Street. Check Sunset Key Cottages rates.
Beachside Resort and Residences
The space booking. Beachside sits on North Roosevelt Boulevard, away from Old Town. Its own site lists a private beach and a marina for direct ocean access, plus a shuttle downtown.
It bills its rooms and suites as the largest in Key West, which suits families and groups.

Margaritaville Beach House, the former Barbary Beach House, faces Smathers Beach across South Roosevelt Boulevard – close, but not on the sand.
Tranquility Bay Beachfront Resort often shows up in Key West searches, but it's in Marathon, in the Middle Keys, not Key West.

Key West is a walk-to-dinner town with a few good beaches, not a beach town. Book the sand you want before you book the island.

When to go
Winter is the peak season, so book the beachfront rooms early. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, so check cancellation terms for a late-summer trip.
