If the ocean view is the point, book Trisara. All 48 villas face the Andaman Sea from the hillside above Nai Thon Bay, the pools and terraces face due west into the sunset, and the resort's Pru holds a Michelin star – rare for a hotel restaurant anywhere in Thailand. Trisara Villas and Residences Phuket

Trisara is a hill-set property above Nai Thon Bay on the quiet north-west coast, and its structure is unusually simple: 48 ocean-facing pool villas plus two-to-six-bedroom private residences, and every one of them has a private pool facing the Andaman Sea. The Ocean View Pool Villa is the standard category; the Ocean View Pool Residence adds living space.

The orientation is the product. Pools and living terraces face due west, so the sunset over the water is what you're paying for, and Nai Thon itself is one of Phuket's smallest and least crowded beaches. The airport is 15 minutes away. On this island that's a genuine luxury.

Dining is a real differentiator rather than a listed amenity. Pru holds a Michelin star, working almost entirely from Thai-sourced ingredients, alongside two other restaurants and the Jara Spa. One caveat on the wet season: the north-west coast is better sheltered than west-coast beaches like Kamala and Surin, giving Trisara a slightly longer usable outdoor season. It's a jungle hillside above Kamala village with 38 pool villas built to four distinct architectural concepts, each tied to a fictional clan: Clay Pool Cottages built into the earth, Tent Pool Villas under open canvas, Bird's Nest Pool Villas raised on wooden columns into the canopy, and seven Tree Pool Houses in the higher treeline.

Pool sizes track the concept. Clay Pool Cottages have 21 m² pools; the Tent, Bird's Nest and Tree categories have 30 m² pools. The higher nest and tree villas see the Andaman Sea; the forest-floor categories trade that view for more privacy. It's a Small Luxury Hotels of the World member.

Be clear about what it isn't. Kamala Beach is 1.2 km away – a five-minute drive, not a walk – so this is a rainforest stay with beach access rather than a beach resort. The estate carries a lot beyond the villas: seven restaurants and a café, Baba Poolclub, the Cool Spa, two tennis courts, and Baba Nest, one of Phuket's most photographed rooftop bars. The trade is position – Cape Panwa is about 45 minutes from the airport, further than Nai Thon or Kamala, and the nearest beach is narrow compared with the west coast. It's the most centrally located property on this list – roughly a kilometer from Patong's dining and nightlife, and about 25 minutes from the airport.

Three categories carry a private pool: the Lagoon Pool Pavilion and Garden Pool Pavilion, both with terrace pools, and the larger standalone Pool Villa. The Lagoon Pool Pavilions look over the resort's own lagoon.

One correction worth making. The internet gets this wrong. Rosewood is not part of Marriott and its stays don't earn Marriott Bonvoy points – Rosewood Hotel Group is privately owned by Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and runs independently of the major chain programs. Book it for the hotel, not for the points. Book this one if you want a private pool and a restaurant scene you can walk to. The headline unit is the Beachfront Layan Pool Villa at 280 m², a standalone villa with a private pool two minutes on foot from a calm, sheltered bay next to Bang Tao.

Nine pool-villa categories is more choice than any other resort here offers, which makes this the practical pick when the party size or budget doesn't fit neatly into another property's two or three options. It sits 15 minutes from the airport, adjacent to the Laguna Phuket cluster – the easiest arrival on the island for a late flight.

Now the naming trap. Layan Residences by Anantara is a separate property, a villa community of 27 pool residences associated with the brand rather than part of the resort's own bookable inventory. Same name, same beach. Different product, different booking route. Book this one if you want a beachfront pool villa and the widest range of categories. Why Phuket's five resorts aren't interchangeable

Most destinations in this guide have one private-pool format and a few price points. Phuket has five formats.

The island is big enough to contain genuinely different geographies, and each of these resorts committed to one. Keemala took the rainforest hillside and built pools into a canopy, which no beachfront site could physically support. Sri Panwa took an entire headland and got 360-degree water views and room for 12-meter pools. Trisara took the quiet north-west and pointed every villa at the sunset. Rosewood took proximity and accepted Patong as a neighbor. Anantara Layan took the beach itself and built breadth.

That means the usual ranking question doesn't apply cleanly here. A canopy villa and a beachfront villa aren't better or worse than each other – they're answers to different questions, and the guest ratings across these five sit close enough together that the rating won't decide it for you.

There's one honest caveat that cuts across all five. Phuket's wet season runs May to October, and while a private pool means sea conditions stop mattering for swimming, afternoon storms are real. The north-west beaches (Nai Thon, Layan) are better sheltered from swell than the south-west. For other Thai options, Krabi and Phang Nga sit across the same Andaman coast with two boat-only resorts, while Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are on the Gulf side with an inverted rainy season. What to do beyond the pool

A private pool covers the mornings; the water outside the villa covers the rest of the trip. November is often the best value month: dry-season conditions have begun but rates haven't reached the December–January peak. October is the other shoulder, cheaper still with sporadic rain.

The wet season runs May to October, bringing heavy afternoon showers and occasionally tropical storms. Rates drop 30–50% from peak, showers rarely last all day, and a private pool means you swim regardless of the sea. Avoid June through September if you want guaranteed all-day sun.
