Phuket has more private-pool villas than anywhere else in Thailand, and its best resorts aren't versions of the same product. One puts a pool in every villa inside the Laguna complex. One suspends 30 m² pools in the rainforest canopy. One runs 12-meter infinity pools on Cape Panwa. Which Phuket private pool villa should you book?

For most trips, book Banyan Tree Phuket. Every villa has its own pool, so there's no cheaper room to book by mistake, it's inside the Laguna Phuket complex on Bang Tao, and it opens at around half the rate of Sri Panwa or Rosewood. Then the specialists. If the ocean view is the point, book Trisara. If you want something you can't book anywhere else, Keemala's canopy villas. For a big pool on a quiet cape, Sri Panwa. For beachfront villas near the airport, Anantara Mai Khao. For Patong's restaurants, Rosewood – or Crest for less.

Banyan Tree Phuket

The safest booking on the island. Banyan Tree sits inside Laguna Phuket on Bang Tao, and every villa comes with its own pool – there's no standard hotel room here. The entry Serenity Pool Villa has a 17 m² pool with a jet pool; the Banyan Pool Villa adds more space.

At the top sit the DoublePool Villas, a separate enclave of 26, each with a 15-meter infinity pool and a bedroom that appears to float over a wading pool. The Spa Pool Villas are adults-only, with a private spa pavilion.

Trisara Villas and Residences Phuket

Trisara is a hill-set property above Nai Thon Bay on the quiet north-west coast, and its structure is unusually simple: 48 ocean-facing pool villas plus two-to-six-bedroom private residences, and every one of them has a private pool facing the Andaman Sea. The Ocean View Pool Villa is the standard category; the Ocean View Pool Residence adds living space.

The orientation is the product. Pools and living terraces face due west, so the sunset over the water is what you're paying for, and Nai Thon itself is one of Phuket's smallest and least crowded beaches. The airport is 15 minutes away. On this island that's a genuine luxury.

Dining is a real differentiator rather than a listed amenity. Pru holds a Michelin star, working almost entirely from Thai-sourced ingredients, alongside two other restaurants and the Jara Spa. One caveat on the wet season: the north-west coast is better sheltered than west-coast beaches like Kamala and Surin, giving Trisara a slightly longer usable outdoor season. Keemala

Keemala is the property on this list you genuinely cannot substitute. It's a jungle hillside above Kamala village with 38 pool villas built to four distinct architectural concepts, each tied to a fictional clan: Clay Pool Cottages built into the earth, Tent Pool Villas under open canvas, Bird's Nest Pool Villas raised on wooden columns into the canopy, and seven Tree Pool Houses in the higher treeline.

Pool sizes track the concept. Clay Pool Cottages have 21 m² pools; the Tent, Bird's Nest and Tree categories have 30 m² pools. The higher nest and tree villas see the Andaman Sea; the forest-floor categories trade that view for more privacy. It's a Small Luxury Hotels of the World member.

Be clear about what it isn't. Kamala Beach is 1.2 km away – a five-minute drive, not a walk – so this is a rainforest stay with beach access rather than a beach resort. Sri Panwa

Sri Panwa sits on a 40-acre estate at the tip of Cape Panwa, Phuket's south-eastern headland, with villas scattered across the slope and 360-degree Andaman views from the high points. Accommodation runs from one- and two-bedroom Pool Villas up to three- to five-bedroom Villas, all standalone.

The pool specification is the reason to book. Most villas have a 12-meter infinity pool, substantially larger than the plunge-pool format at many comparably priced luxury hotels.

The estate carries a lot beyond the villas: seven restaurants and a café, Baba Poolclub, the Cool Spa, two tennis courts, and the Baba Nest rooftop bar. The trade is position – Cape Panwa is about 45 minutes from the airport, and the nearest beach is narrow compared with the west coast. Rosewood Phuket

Rosewood sits directly on Tri Trang Beach in Emerald Bay, laid out as a village of pavilions and paths running from hilltop down to the sand, with calm turquoise water in front. It's roughly a kilometer from Patong's dining and nightlife, and about 25 minutes from the airport – and it's the highest-rated resort on this list.

Three categories carry a private pool: the Lagoon Pool Pavilion and Garden Pool Pavilion, both with terrace pools, and the larger standalone Pool Villa. The Lagoon Pool Pavilions look over the resort's own lagoon.

One correction worth making. Rosewood is not part of Marriott and its stays don't earn Marriott Bonvoy points – Rosewood Hotel Group is privately owned by Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and runs independently of the major chain programs. Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas

The beachfront villa resort. Anantara Mai Khao has 83 pool villas, plus pavilions and suites, on Mai Khao Beach – the island's longest, backed by national park. The pool villas come in one- and two-bedroom layouts, with a signature Jim Thompson Villa at the top.

It's the easy-arrival pick, 15 minutes from the airport, and it has a kids' club, a spa and beachfront dining. The resort also appeared in HBO's The White Lotus season 3. Its Booking.com listing still reads anantara-phuket-resort-spa, from an older name.

The trade is distance from everything else. Patong, Kamala and the west-coast towns are a long drive away. Book this one if you want a pool villa on a long, quiet beach and no town outside the gate. Check Anantara Mai Khao rates – pool villas from around $670.

Crest Resort and Pool Villas

The Patong answer for less money. Crest sits near Tri Trang Beach, just outside central Patong, and sells four genuine pool-villa categories: the Deluxe Pool Villa (110 m², private-use pool), the Premier Pool Villa, the Premier Panorama Pool Villa with a hot tub and sea view, and a two-bedroom Family Pool Villa.

The trap is in the cheaper rooms. The Deluxe Pool Access rooms have a Jacuzzi on a wooden deck, not a pool of their own. If a private pool is the point, book a category with "Pool Villa" in the name.

Guest reviews praise the cleanliness and staff, but note the resort is awkward for taxis and a ride from Patong's center. Book this one if you want a private pool within reach of Patong without Rosewood's rate. Check Crest Resort rates – pool villas from around $380.

Anantara Layan Phuket Resort

Anantara Layan is a strong alternative for a beachfront pool villa: 47 pool villas across nine categories, alongside 30 rooms and suites, on Layan Beach in north-west Phuket. The headline unit is the Beachfront Layan Pool Villa at 280 m², a standalone villa with a private pool two minutes on foot from a calm, sheltered bay next to Bang Tao.

It sits 15 minutes from the airport, adjacent to the Laguna Phuket cluster, and nine pool-villa categories make it easy to match a party size or budget.

Now the naming trap. Layan Residences by Anantara is a separate property, a villa community of 27 pool residences associated with the brand rather than part of the resort's own bookable inventory. Same name, same beach. Different product, different booking route. Book this one if you want a beachfront pool villa and a wide range of categories. Sri Panwa isn't alone on the cape. Cape Panwa Hotel sits on its own private beach on Ao Yon Bay, and it's mostly a suite hotel – only two categories carry a private pool: the Panwa 2-Bedroom Pool Villa, with its pool facing the sea, and the three-bedroom Panwa Lodge on the beach. Why Phuket's pool-villa resorts aren't interchangeable

Most destinations in this guide have one private-pool format and a few price points. Phuket has several.

The island is big enough to contain genuinely different geographies, and each resort committed to one. Keemala took the rainforest hillside and built pools into a canopy. Sri Panwa, Cape Panwa Hotel and V Villas share the south-eastern cape, trading distance from the airport for quiet and big views. Trisara pointed every villa at the sunset in the north-west. Banyan Tree and Anantara Layan went for the Laguna and Layan area, close to the airport. Anantara Mai Khao took the long northern beach, and Rosewood and Crest took proximity to Patong.

That means the usual ranking question doesn't apply cleanly. A canopy villa and a beachfront villa aren't better or worse than each other – they're answers to different questions. If you're torn, Banyan Tree Phuket is the one where every category is a real pool villa.

For other Thai options, Krabi and Phang Nga sit across the same Andaman coast, while Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are on the Gulf side with an inverted rainy season. Bali has a deeper villa market centered on Ubud's jungle resorts.

What to do beyond the pool

A private pool covers the mornings; the water outside the villa covers the rest of the trip. Phi Phi Islands is the open-water beaches-and-snorkeling day, James Bond Island trades that for sheltered limestone and sea canoeing, and the same bay runs again as a sunset cruise and a bioluminescent plankton night canoe. For proper diving, Similan is the serious, seasonal option and Racha Yai the year-round one that needs no certification.

When to go

Phuket's dry season runs November to April, with January and February typically the clearest. If you're reading this before November, this is the booking window rather than the browsing window – the December and January weeks go first, and the villa categories go before the standard rooms do.

November is often the best value month: dry-season conditions have begun but rates haven't reached the December–January peak. October is the other shoulder, cheaper still with sporadic rain.

The wet season runs May to October, bringing heavy afternoon showers and occasionally tropical storms. Rates drop 30–50% from peak, showers rarely last all day, and a private pool means you swim regardless of the sea. Avoid June through September if you want guaranteed all-day sun.
