Search for a Cartagena hotel with a private pool and the walled city will offer you a hot tub instead. Every colonial mansion-hotel inside the walls – Casa San Agustín, Casa Pestagua, Sofitel Legend Santa Clara – tops out at a jacuzzi on a private terrace. The genuine private-pool rooms are an hour south, on Barú, and one hotel owns that answer: Hotel Las Islas, whose Bungalow with Private Pool starts around $778 a night.

One row, and that is the finding rather than a gap in the research. Below is every walled-city and Barú property we checked, and what each actually sells. The private pool villas hub runs the same test elsewhere.
Which Cartagena hotel should you book?
If a pool of your own is the requirement, book Hotel Las Islas and stay on Barú. It is the only property in the Cartagena area with a private-pool category you can actually buy through a booking site, and it has four of them. Check Las Islas availability – the private pools are confined to the sea-level and Grand categories, a minority of the property, and they go first in high season.
If sleeping inside the walls matters more than the pool itself, book Hotel Casa San Agustín's Suite with Hot Tub – the best version of what the old town genuinely offers, and no one there offers more. Do not book it expecting a pool.

Hotel Las Islas
Las Islas is a bungalow resort on Isla Barú, set in jungle and mangrove above the Corales del Rosario marine park, about an hour from central Cartagena by road or a boat transfer from the city. Bungalows sit either up in the treetops or down at sea level, and that split is the one that matters here.
The hotel's own site names four categories with a private pool, and Booking.com flags a fifth – in each case listing "Private pool" in the room facilities rather than leaving it to marketing copy:
- Bungalow with Private Pool – 70 m², from around $778. The entry point, and the one to book.
- Bungalow with Sea View – 80 m², from around $888. The name says view, but Booking.com's own room description reads "this double room provides a private pool" and lists Private pool among its facilities.
- Grand Sea Level Bungalow with private pool and Grand Familiar Bungalow with private pool – the larger sea-level units, the family one unique on the property.
- Grand Treetop Bungalow with private pool and jacuzzi – the exception to the rule below: a canopy bungalow, eight meters up, that has both.
Watch the category names, because two of them are traps. Bungalow with Jacuzzi (~$548) is cheaper and has no pool, and the standard Treetop Bungalows – the ones in the photographs everyone shares, 70–80 m² up in the canopy – have jacuzzis instead. Treetop does not mean pool here; only the Grand Treetop category carries one.
Separately, the hotel runs Isleta – a private-island annex five minutes away whose 10 sea-level bungalows all have a private pool. That is Isleta's own count, not the main resort's, and it books as a distinct property. At the main hotel, Spa Niña Daniela has a thalassotherapy pool and hydrotherapy circuit, and the beach is private white sand.
Book this one if the private pool is the point of the trip and you are willing to make Cartagena a day trip rather than a base. Check Las Islas rates – confirm the category says private pool, not jacuzzi, before you pay.
Jacuzzi is not pool. At Las Islas the standard Treetop Bungalows and the Bungalow with Jacuzzi have hot tubs, not pools. The one canopy bungalow with a real pool is the Grand Treetop. Check the exact category name before paying.
Why no hotel inside the walled city has a private pool
This is the part worth understanding before you keep searching. Cartagena's luxury hotels inside the walls are conversions of 16th- to 18th-century mansions and a former convent, built wall-to-wall around small interior courtyards. There is no space for a pool per room, and the buildings are protected, so nobody is cutting one in.
What those hotels sell instead is a hot tub on a private terrace, and the room names say so plainly once you look:
- Hotel Casa San Agustín – three restored townhouses near the Plaza de la Aduana. Its Booking.com listing sells Deluxe Double, Junior Suite, Suite with Hot Tub, Two-Bedroom Suite and Presidential Suite. The hotel's own page for its ~90 m² Premium Suite lists a private jacuzzi on a private terrace. Excellent room, top-rated hotel, not a private pool. This is the walled city's best answer, and it is the one to book if you want to sleep inside the walls.
- Sofitel Legend Santa Clara – a converted 17th-century convent with the largest pool in the historic center at over 260 m², which is shared. Its terrace suites are named Spa King Suite with Terrace and Jacuzzi and Imperial Amaral King Suite with Terrace and Spa Bath.
- Casa Pestagua – the Relais & Châteaux mansion. Its flagship Count of Pestagua Suite, 139 m² with elevator access and old-town views, has a private terrace and a Jacuzzi tub.
- Casa Serrezuela – a rooftop terrace with a hot tub. The "4-bedroom villa with pool in the walled city" that shows up in searches is a whole-house rental listing, not a hotel room category.
- Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena – opened 2 April 2026 in a converted colonial complex, 131 rooms and suites. Its three-bedroom Casa Ambrad suite has a rooftop plunge pool, but the hotel has no Booking.com listing, so there is nothing to point a booking link at yet. Worth watching.
And on Barú, beyond Las Islas
Barú and the Rosario Islands are where the private pools actually are, but the inventory is far thinner than the beach-club day-trip traffic suggests.
Sofitel Barú Calablanca Beach Resort, the big resort on the peninsula, sells Emerald Ocean King Suite with Hot Tub and Serenity Ocean King Suite with Hot Tub – again hot tubs, not pools. Ancalá Casas Altas, a small 5-star near Cholón Bay, has one genuine private-pool unit, the Casita Laguna, on its own terrace apart from the other buildings; its two other villas share a pool, and we could not find a Booking.com listing to send you to, so it stays off the list above.
Everything else on Barú and Isla Grande that markets a pool means a shared resort pool.
What to do with this
Cartagena is not a private-pool destination in the way Tulum or Costa Rica are, and the honest version of the answer is one hotel. If that hotel works for you, book it early – the pools belong to a minority of the bungalows, and December-to-March demand on Barú is heavy. Check Hotel Las Islas availability.
If the beach matters more than the pool, beachfront resorts in Cartagena covers Bocagrande and the city's own coastline, and the Rosario Islands covers the archipelago Las Islas looks out over. If it is the private pool you are set on and the country is flexible, private pool villas in Costa Rica is a far deeper market at comparable rates.
When to go
December through March is the dry season – least humidity, least rain, and the busiest and most expensive months on Barú. Book the pool bungalows months ahead for this window.
April through June is a good compromise: warm sea, occasional showers, noticeably lower rates. August through November is the wettest stretch, with the heaviest rain from September, and the cheapest.
Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) is 10–15 minutes from the walled city. Barú is roughly an hour further by road, or a boat transfer from Cartagena – Las Islas arranges both.
