Which Cancun resort has the best beach?

For swimming, the top of the 7. The north-facing beaches look onto Bahía de Mujeres, where Isla Mujeres buffers the swell – local guides rate Playa Langosta, Tortugas and Caracol calm enough for small kids. The same orientation keeps them out of the main sargassum current.

Dreams Sands Cancun

The calm-water booking for young families. Dreams Sands sits at Km 8.5, on the bay side of the 7, where the water stays flat and shallow. The Booking.com URL still carries its old name, Grand Oasis Viva.

Four outdoor pools, a children's pool and a Pevonia spa back up the beach. Guest reviews land good rather than great, and rates start around $210 – some of the calmest water in Cancun at one of the lowest prices on this list.

The Caribbean side

Hyatt Zilara Cancun

The couples' booking. Hyatt Zilara Cancun is 18 and over, with about 310 rooms and suites at Km 11.5, freshly renovated in 2026. Every balcony has a hammock and a double jetted tub, and the beachfront infinity pool has a swim-up bar.

This is the former Royal in Cancun – the Booking.com URL still says so. It's among the top-rated resorts on this list, from around $475. One honest caveat: Km 11.5 is open-sea water, so expect waves on some days.

Beach Palace

The Palace Resorts pick. Beach Palace, now billed as Beach Palace Family Resort & Spa, has 287 rooms and six restaurants on the sand at Km 11.5. As the new name says, it pitches itself squarely at families.

Sunscape Cancun

The budget booking. Sunscape Cancun has had three names in recent years – Gran Caribe Real, then Wyndham Alltra Cancun, now Sunscape by Hyatt – and the Booking.com URL still carries the first. Same building, same Km 11.5 beach.

Marriott Cancun All-Inclusive

The family booking with points. The former CasaMagna Marriott now runs all-inclusive, with 450 rooms on the beach at Km 14.5 and children's programs. Marriott's own rate covers meals, drinks, taxes and gratuities.

Iberostar Selection Cancun

The golfer's booking. Iberostar Selection Cancún sits at Km 17, next to the Iberostar Cancun golf course. Adults can book up to the Coral level, now sold as Iberostar Selection Coral Cancún – Adults Only.

Is AVA Resort Cancun on the beach?

Yes. AVA sits at Km 25.3, near the southern end of the Hotel Zone, with a private beach and ocean views from every room. It also has AVA Bay, a man-made Crystal Lagoon for calm-water swimming – which is probably why people ask.

Grand Hyatt Cancun Beach Resort is due to open in December 2026 in Puerto Cancún, the gated marina district between downtown and the Hotel Zone – 500 rooms, fully all-inclusive. It hasn't opened yet, so it isn't ranked. Moon Palace and the Costa Mujeres resorts sit outside the Hotel Zone, so they aren't ranked either.

The trade you're really making

Cancun doesn't make you choose between cheap and calm. Dreams Sands, on the bay, is one of the lowest rates on this list. The real trade is calm water against the open-sea postcard – the bluest water comes with the biggest waves and the most seaweed.

When to go

Winter through spring is Cancun's dry season and its most expensive stretch, with US spring break pushing rates up again in March. May and June are warm and quieter.

If there's a month to avoid, it's September or October – the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30. Seaweed is less predictable year to year, so check a live sargassum report the week before you fly, or book the bay side and stop worrying about it.
