On the Riviera Maya, the highest-rated resort and the best beach are two different addresses. Grand Velas tops the guest ratings, but its shoreline is lined with sand-filled tubes against erosion. For water you'll actually want to swim in, go south to Xpu-Há – clear, usually calm, soft sand – and book Barceló Maya Palace on it. Couples should book Valentin Imperial, on a half-mile private beach north of Playa del Carmen.

Which Riviera Maya beachfront resort should you book?

For a family beach trip, book Barceló Maya Palace. It sits on Xpu-Há, the best swimming beach of any resort on this list, with a children's water park and taxes and gratuities included. Check Barceló Maya Palace availability first – rates peak in December, so lock in the room before the flight.

Which Riviera Maya resort has the best beach?

Xpu-Há. Mexico's own Caribbean tourism board describes its water as clear and usually calm, with soft sand and a quieter feel than Playa del Carmen. Akumal's bay is the other calm-water standout – shallow enough to watch sea turtles feeding – but none of the big resorts on this list sits on it.

Playa del Carmen itself is a different story. Its main beach faces east, straight into the Atlantic sargassum current, and July and August have historically been the heaviest months. The beach in front of Playacar tends to fare slightly better, largely because the resort beach clubs invest in cleanup.

North of Playa del Carmen

Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya

The couples' booking. Valentin Imperial is adults-only, with 540 rooms on a half-mile private beach at Playa del Secreto, about 25 minutes from Cancun airport. Every room has a private indoor hot tub, and a string of restaurants plus two swim-up bars cover the all-inclusive side.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya

The luxury booking, with one honest caveat. Grand Velas sits a few minutes north of Playa del Carmen in three separate sections: Zen, set back by the jungle; Ambassador, on the beach with the largest pool; and Grand Class, the oceanfront wing where children under 12 aren't allowed.

It's the top-rated resort on this list with Booking.com guests, from around $1,215. The beach is where it falls short. The resort installed sand-filled tubes along the shore to fight erosion and seaweed, and a recent reviewer found the water murky by Caribbean standards.

Ocean Riviera Paradise

The family value booking. Ocean Riviera Paradise is a big H10 resort on the beach at Punta Bete, with more than ten restaurants, a dozen-plus bars, a bowling alley and one pool right on the sand. Adults can book into El Beso, a separate adults-only section with its own listing.

In Playa del Carmen

Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen

The adults-only booking in town. Hyatt Vivid has worn three names – Booking.com's URL still says The Royal Playa del Carmen, and Expedia's still says Hilton. It's a short walk from Fifth Avenue, with seven restaurants and hot tubs in the rooms.

It's 18+, from around $310. The catch is the town beach, which sits directly in the summer sargassum path. Book this one if you want an all-inclusive base and Fifth Avenue's restaurants on foot. Check Hyatt Vivid rates.

Mahekal Beach Resort

The no-wristband booking. Mahekal, now Mahekal Beach Front Resort & Spa, is a low-rise cluster of 195 Mayan-style rooms on the sand at Calle 38, about five minutes on foot from Fifth Avenue. Rooms have hammocks on the terrace and no TVs.

It isn't a big all-inclusive: you eat à la carte, which suits travelers who want Playa del Carmen's restaurants. Booking.com's URL still carries an older name, Shangri-La Caribe. From around $395. Book this one if you want the beach and the town, not a resort bubble. Check Mahekal rates.

Barcelo Maya Palace

The best-beach booking. Barceló Maya Palace sits on Xpu-Há, part of the larger Barceló Maya complex, with six restaurants, a children's water park and a spa. Taxes and gratuities are included in the rate.

Booking.com guest reviews are good rather than great – you're booking the water as much as the resort. From around $230, it's also one of the better-value rates here. Book this one if your family will spend every day in the sea. Check Barceló Maya Palace rates.

Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya

The split-personality booking. Hard Rock Riviera Maya in Puerto Aventuras runs two sides with separate listings: Hacienda for families and Heaven, adults-only. Nine restaurants, a private white-sand beach, and every room has a double spa tub.

It's the former Aventura Cove and Aventura Spa Palace – Booking.com's review pages still carry those names. Reviews are the most mixed on this list. From around $350. Why the best resort isn't on the best beach

The highest-rated resort on this list has had to armor its own shoreline. The calmest, clearest water is at Xpu-Há, just south of Puerto Aventuras, under a resort that rates good rather than great.

So decide what the trip is for. If it's the spa, the food and the service, Grand Velas earns its rate. If it's the sea, book Barceló Maya Palace for a family or Valentin Imperial as a couple.

When to go

December through April is the dry season and the most expensive stretch, with December the priciest month at resorts like Barceló and Hard Rock. May and early June are warmer and quieter.

Avoid July and August if seaweed matters – historically the heaviest months for Playa del Carmen. And September–October is the heart of hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30. Rates drop then, so book flexible cancellation if you go.
