Sanya gives you more private-pool villa per dollar than anywhere else in this guide. Banyan Tree Sanya's entry Lagoon Pool Villa is 270 m² – bigger than most three-bedroom villas in Thailand or Bali – and opens around $343 a night, with a pool of its own. Every category on that property is a pool villa. Two other resorts here sell a genuine private pool, and one well-known name sells something that only sounds like one.

Every category above was checked against live Booking.com room facilities, and where Booking was ambiguous, against the hotel's own description. Sanya is a domestic Chinese resort market, so English-language guides to it are thin and often wrong about which rooms have what. The private pool villas hub applies the same test elsewhere.
Which Sanya private pool villa should you book?
Book Banyan Tree Sanya. It is the only all-villa property in Sanya – there is no room category without a private pool – and its entry villa is larger than the top suite at most resorts on this list. At around $343 it also undercuts both alternatives. Check Banyan Tree availability – it sits on Luhuitou Bay, closer to Sanya town than the Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay resort strips.
If guest ratings matter more than size, book Rosewood Sanya – it is the best-reviewed of the three, though its private pool is a balcony plunge pool rather than a garden one. If you want a beachfront villa with a garden and a private gazebo, book the Mandarin Oriental's Ocean Front Pavilion with Plunge Pool – but read the warning below first, because the pavilion next to it in the price list is not the same thing.

Banyan Tree Sanya
This is the simplest recommendation in the guide, because there is nothing to get wrong: every room category Banyan Tree Sanya sells is a pool villa, and Booking.com lists Private pool in the facilities of all of them.

The villas are built around a sculpted lagoon-shaped pool with an open-air bathtub in a lotus pond and a walled private garden – a Banyan Tree signature, not a Sanya one.
Two honest caveats. Its Booking.com guest score is the lowest of the three here, on a small review base – international guests are a minority at a resort whose clientele is overwhelmingly domestic. And Luhuitou Bay is a working part of Sanya rather than a manicured resort strip, which is a plus if you want to leave the property and a minus if you do not.
Book this one if floor area and a genuine walled-garden pool matter more than a polished review score. Check Banyan Tree rates – Chinese public holidays, especially Spring Festival and the October Golden Week, clear this property out entirely.
Rosewood Sanya
Rosewood sits on Haitang Bay, the newest and most built-up of Sanya's resort strips, in a 244-room property where the pool categories are rooms and suites rather than standalone villas.
The distinction is worth understanding before you book. Rosewood's Ocean View Pool King – 103 m², from around $466 – is described in its own Booking listing as having "a private balcony plunge pool, a bathtub overlooking the balcony", with Private pool in the facilities. It is genuinely yours. It is also on a balcony, not in a garden, and it is a plunge pool rather than something you swim lengths in.
The range runs up through Seascape Ocean View Pool King and Twin at around $529 to Ocean View Pool Suite and Panoramic Ocean View Pool Suite at the top. The ocean-view rooms without a pool start around $285, so the pool costs roughly $180 a night.
This is the best-rated of the three on Booking.com and the most conventionally luxurious.
Book this one if you want the strongest guest ratings in Sanya and are content with a plunge pool on a large balcony. Check Rosewood rates – make sure the category name contains the word Pool, because the ocean-view rooms look nearly identical in photos.
Mandarin Oriental, Sanya
The Mandarin Oriental at Dadonghai has the most attractive private-pool product here and the most misleading room list. Two categories, similarly priced, are fundamentally different:
- Ocean Front Pavilion with Plunge Pool – 52 m², from around $498. The hotel's own description gives it "access to a private gazebo and plunge pool", ground floor, surrounded by garden. This is the one you want.
- Pool Pavilion – 52 m², from around $524. The hotel describes it as having "direct access to an ocean view swimming pool". That is the resort's shared pool, reached from your terrace. Booking.com's facilities list confirms it: pool view, no private pool.
Above the pavilions sit the villas – Ocean View Pool Villa and the two-bedroom South China Sea Pool Villa, a beachfront villa whose own garden has an infinity pool and outdoor dining for four.
The property's Booking.com guest score is the weakest on this list. Take that alongside the fact that it is the oldest of the three and the closest to Sanya's busiest beach.
Book this one if you want a beachfront villa with a private garden – and book the Ocean Front Pavilion, not the Pool Pavilion. Check Mandarin Oriental rates – the two pavilion names are a $26 apart and only one has a pool of its own.
"Pool Pavilion" is the shared pool. At the Mandarin Oriental it means direct access to the resort's ocean-view pool from your terrace. The private plunge pool belongs to the Ocean Front Pavilion with Plunge Pool.
The Ritz-Carlton Sanya, and why it isn't in the grid
The Ritz-Carlton Sanya, Yalong Bay genuinely has the deepest private-pool inventory in the city: 33 villas, each with a private pool and butler service. Its Booking.com listing carries them by name – One-Bedroom Ocean Front Villa with Private Pool and One-Bedroom Garden Villa with Private Pool at 130 m², a Two-Bedroom Ocean Front Villa with Private Pool at 252 m², plus 80 m² Lagoon Access rooms whose own listing describes "private plunge pool on terrace + direct lagoon pool access".
It is not in the grid for one reason: on six separate sets of dates, across four months and both two- and four-guest searches, none of those villa categories returned availability or a rate. Only the standard ocean-view rooms did. We do not publish a price we cannot see.
If you want to try it yourself, the correct listing is The Ritz-Carlton Sanya, Yalong Bay – note that older guides, including an earlier version of this page, pointed at a URL that no longer resolves.
One more thing to know if you do book there. The Lagoon Access rooms combine two different pools: a small private plunge pool on your own terrace, and steps down into the resort's shared lagoon pool. The lagoon is not yours, however the photographs read.
What this market is actually like
Sanya is China's domestic tropical resort, on Hainan Island at roughly the same latitude as Hawaii, and it behaves like a domestic market: enormous resorts, deep villa inventory, prices set by Chinese holiday calendars rather than by Western school terms.
That has two practical consequences. Space is cheap and ratings are noisy. A 270 m² villa with a private pool for around $343 does not exist in Phuket or Bali; equally, Booking.com scores here rest on small international review bases and read lower than the properties deserve.
And the holidays matter more than the season. Spring Festival in late January or February, the Labour Day break in early May, and the October Golden Week empty every villa on this page. Outside those windows, availability is generally good and rates fall sharply.
If your dates fall in a Chinese public holiday, book now – Banyan Tree is the one with the most villas to lose, and the first to lose them.

When to go
October through April is Sanya's dry season and the reason the city exists as a resort: warm, low humidity, reliable sun, and the reason rates hold up through winter. December to February is peak, both for weather and for domestic holiday travel.
May through September is hot, humid and increasingly wet, with typhoon risk from July through September on Hainan's south coast. Rates drop hard, and a private pool becomes considerably more attractive than a beach.
Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) is 15–20 minutes from Dadonghai and Luhuitou Bay, and around 40–50 minutes from Haitang Bay. Check current visa rules before booking – Hainan has historically operated more relaxed visa-free entry than mainland China, and the terms change.
