Nusa Penida is a day trip for almost everyone who visits it – off the Sanur boat at 08:00, back on it by 16:00. You can stay overnight, and four properties across Penida and neighboring Nusa Lembongan sell a villa with a pool that belongs to your booking alone. Three of those are on Nusa Penida itself; Aqua Nusa is on Nusa Lembongan, a separate island 15 minutes further on by boat. They are covered together because almost nobody visits one without the other, and the fast boats from Sanur serve both. The private pool villas hub has the rest of the silo.
Which one should you book?
Book Pramana Natura. Its One Bedroom Pool Villa Ocean View – around 76 m², with a private pool and balcony over the water – opens near $187, and the property carries the largest verified review base and the highest rating on either island. Check Pramana Natura availability – its Suite Ocean View sits about $60 cheaper on the same page and has no private pool at all, which is the mistake to avoid here.
If the sunset is the reason you're coming, book MAUA – its villas face west over the Gamat Bay cliffs. If you want village life and restaurants within walking distance, book Aqua Nusa on Lembongan. And if the budget is genuinely tight, Aksara puts a private pool on a beach for a fraction of everything else here.

Yes, you can stay on Nusa Penida
Worth stating plainly, because the search demand suggests it isn't obvious: Nusa Penida has overnight accommodation, and all four properties here are real hotels and villas taking multi-night bookings. The island is not a national park with day-only access.
The reason it feels that way is the boat schedule. Fast boats run from Sanur in Bali to Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh in about 30–45 minutes, and the day-tour operators fill the morning departures and the late-afternoon returns. Between roughly 16:00 and 09:00 the Kelingking and Diamond Beach viewpoints empty out almost completely.
That gap is the entire argument for staying. A clifftop pool villa on Nusa Penida costs a fraction of the Bali equivalent, and it buys you the island's viewpoints without the coach traffic.
Pramana Natura Nusa Penida
A clifftop property at Banjar Anyar in Sebunibus, on Nusa Penida's northwest coast, built around ocean-view pools rather than beach access. It holds the strongest guest rating and the deepest review base of anything on either island.
Two categories have a private pool. The One Bedroom Pool Villa Ocean View with Daily Afternoon Tea is around 76 m² with its own pool and balcony over the water; the Royal Pool Villa Ocean View with Daily Afternoon Tea, around 95 m², adds a larger living area for longer stays. Below them sits a Suite Ocean View – a room, not a villa, with no pool of its own.
One logistical note that catches people out: the property requires a boat transfer, arranged with them directly before you travel. Do not book flights to a tight schedule without confirming it.

MAUA Nusa Penida Bali
The design pick, and the one built for the sunset. MAUA sits on Jalan Gamat Bay in Sakti, on the cliffs above Gamat Bay on Penida's west coast, and its west-facing villas point their plunge pools straight at the Indian Ocean horizon. It is listed with Mr & Mrs Smith, which is a reasonable proxy for the design standard.
Six categories carry a private pool: One Bedroom Pool Villa with Garden View and with Sea View (around 75 m²), the larger One Bedroom Deluxe Pool Villa with Sea View (around 94 m²), and three two-bedroom villas – Infinity View, with Sea View and the Duplex with Valley View at around 140 m².
The two Deluxe Room categories, valley view with or without a balcony, have no private pool – they are the cheapest rows on the page and the easy mis-book.

Aqua Nusa Luxury Lembongan Villas
The Lembongan entry, and the most sociable stay on this list. Aqua Nusa sits above Desa Jungutbatu, Nusa Lembongan's main village, which puts restaurants and beach bars within a walk rather than a scooter ride – the single biggest practical difference between the two islands.
Its room list is the cleanest here: every category is a private-pool villa. The One-Bedroom Sempurna Villa with Private Pool and Ocean View (around 110 m²) is the entry, and above it sit four two-bedroom villas – Villa Taman, Tinggi, Villa Chantique and Luar Biasa – plus the three-bedroom Villa Bunga. The two-bedroom units come with full kitchens, which suits a longer stay.
Reaching it means a second boat leg if you're combining it with Nusa Penida. Lembongan and Penida are linked by the Yellow Bridge to Ceningan, not to each other.

Aksara Private Villa Nusa Penida
Not a resort – a single villa on the beach at Semaya, on the quiet east side of Nusa Penida, near Suana and about 3 km from Giri Putri Cave. The one category, Villa with Sea View, has a private pool and hot tub, its own beach area and private check-in, from roughly $59 a night. Listed sizes differ between platforms, so check the floor plan before booking for more than two.
At that rate it is the cheapest confirmed private pool anywhere in this silo, and the pool is genuinely yours because the whole property is. What you give up is everything a resort provides: no restaurant, no spa, no reception desk, and a location far enough east that Kelingking is a real drive away.
Aksara was relisted on Booking.com under a new page, so its rating has reset and older links to it are dead. The current listing is the one linked here. Check the property's own transfer instructions before booking – Semaya is a long way from the ferry ports.

One property that dropped off this list
Earlier versions of this guide included EDEN Eco-Villas with Private Pool and Panoramic Sea View, a four-villa adults-only property on Penida. It is no longer listed on Booking.com – its page and review history both resolve to a search fallback now, and it appears to be selling through short-let platforms instead.
That is a normal pattern on these islands. Penida's accommodation turns over faster than Bali's, small properties move between platforms, and listings get rebuilt under new pages – Aksara's did exactly that this year. It is the reason every property above was checked against a live booking page rather than a saved link.
Penida or Lembongan?
They are 15 minutes apart by boat and sold as a pair, but they are not interchangeable.
Nusa Penida is big, dramatic and hard work. Kelingking, Angel's Billabong and Diamond Beach are on it, the roads between them are steep and rough, and the clifftop hotels are spread out. You will need a driver or a scooter, and you will spend real time in transit. It is where the views are.
Nusa Lembongan is small and easy. You can walk most of it, Jungut Batu has a proper strip of restaurants and bars, and the water is calmer for snorkeling and diving. It has no Kelingking.
The efficient split for a week is two or three nights on Penida for the viewpoints, then two on Lembongan to stop driving. If you only have two nights, take Penida – the pool villas there are cheaper and the scenery is why you came.

When to go
April to October is the dry season and the window that matters here, because the crossing does. Seas from Sanur are calmest, fast boats run to schedule, and the clifftop viewpoints are at their clearest.
November to March brings rougher water, and fast-boat crossings to both islands are delayed or canceled outright often enough that a same-day connection to an international flight is a bad plan. Build a night in Sanur or Denpasar into the return leg if you travel in those months.
Whichever season, treat the boat as the fixed point of the trip rather than an afterthought. Both islands are reachable only by sea – there is no airport and no bridge from Bali – and several of the properties above arrange their own land transfer from the harbor, which is worth confirming when you book rather than on arrival.
