Which Maldives private island should you book?
For most couples, book The Nautilus. Every house has its own pool, there are no set meal times, and 26 houses on one island keeps it genuinely quiet. Check The Nautilus availability before comparing further – seaplanes only fly in daylight, so pick dates that let you land and connect the same day.
If the budget is the constraint, book Madifushi – a pool in every villa at a fraction of Nautilus's rate. If you'd rather skip the seaplane, book Naladhu. For the fewest neighbors and everything included, book Kudadoo.

Madifushi Private Island
The value pick. Madifushi opened in 2023 in Meemu Atoll, a 35 to 40-minute seaplane south of Malé.
It's the biggest island on this list, and the reason it still belongs here is simple. All 80 villas have a private pool. There are 30 beach villas, led by 26 Serene Pool Villas, and 50 overwater villas, led by 46 Aqua Pool Villas.
Rates start around $750 a night for two. Half-board and all-inclusive plans are both offered, so compare the meal plan, not just the room rate.

Naladhu Private Island Maldives
The no-seaplane option. Naladhu is a small island in South Malé Atoll, reached by speedboat from the airport. You land, you board, you're there.
There are just 20 houses, and every one has its own pool. They split between Beach Houses and Ocean Houses, plus a single Two-Bedroom Beach Pool Residence.
Minor Hotels runs it alongside its Anantara resorts, and a butler comes with every house. Rates start around $1,100 a night.

Gili Lankanfushi
The barefoot one. Gili Lankanfushi covers Lankanfushi Island in North Malé Atoll, a speedboat transfer from the airport, and runs on a no-shoes rule from the moment you step off the boat.
All 45 villas are overwater. The top of the range is The Private Reserve, a multi-level villa out in the lagoon with its own water slide.
Read the tiers before you book. The entry Villa Suite has no pool – you need the Villa Suite with Pool or the Family Villa with Pool for that. Rates start around $1,500 a night.

The Nautilus Maldives
The couples' pick. The Nautilus sits on Thiladhoo Island in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a seaplane flight from Malé.
There are 26 houses and residences, and every category comes with a private pool. Beach Houses have a plunge pool. Ocean Houses have an infinity pool and a glass floor over the lagoon.
Nothing runs on a timetable. Breakfast at noon, dinner at midnight, a boat trip whenever you ask. Rates start around $2,450 a night.

Cheval Blanc Randheli
The design pick. Cheval Blanc Randheli is LVMH's Maldives resort, on Randheli Island in Noonu Atoll, 40 minutes north of Malé by seaplane.
It has fewer than 50 villas, mostly over the water. Garden Water Villas, Water Villas and Two-Bedroom Water Villas all come with private freshwater pools, alongside a small group of Beach Villas. A four-bedroom estate on its own islet sells as one separate unit.
Food is the other reason to come. Its restaurant 1947 is run with Yannick Alléno, and rates start around $2,450 a night.

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island
The most inclusive. Kudadoo is a tiny island in Lhaviyani Atoll with just 15 Ocean Residences, all built over the water.
Every residence is at least 310 m² and has a 44 m² private pool. The rate covers meals, wine, diving, watersports and unlimited spa treatments – there's no bill to add up at checkout.
It's a 40-minute seaplane from Malé, or a 35-minute speedboat from the smaller Maafaru airport. Rates start around $3,450 a night.
Book this one if you want the fewest possible guests and never want to see a check. Check Kudadoo rates – 15 residences is the whole island, and it sells out long before bigger resorts do.
Velaa Private Island
The top of the market. Velaa sits in Noonu Atoll, a 45-minute seaplane from Malé, with 47 villas, houses and residences, every one with its own pool.
Beach Pool Villas are the entry point. Sunrise and Sunset Water Pool Villas sit over the lagoon, and the private residences are sized for families and groups. The island also has its own golf course.
Rates start around $3,700 a night in low season. Book this one if you want the most complete private-island resort in the Maldives and the price isn't the deciding factor. Check Velaa rates.
Private islands in name only – and islands you can't book by the villa
"Private island" is a marketing label here, so it's worth knowing what it doesn't mean.
Niyama Private Islands is a real resort across two islands, Chill and Play, with the Subsix underwater club. It also has 134 villas. It's a good, lively resort. It isn't the small-island stay this list is about, so it isn't ranked.
At the other end, two islands sell only as a whole-island buyout. Four Seasons Private Island at Voavah, in Baa Atoll, takes one party of up to 22 guests from around $50,000 a night. Ithaafushi – The Private Island, beside the Waldorf Astoria, is marketed as the largest private island in the Maldives at 32,000 m², from around $80,000 a night. Neither sells a single villa, so neither is in the grid.
Don't confuse Ithaafushi – The Private Island with Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, the regular resort next door. Only the resort sells individual villas.
Why the Maldives is different
In most countries on this site, a private island resort is rare. In the Maldives it's the default. Resorts have been built one per island since tourism was planned in the 1970s and 1980s, and that's still how the country works.
So the island is a given. What you're really choosing between is villa count, transfer and meal plan – 80 villas or 15, a speedboat or a seaplane, half-board or everything included.

When to go
December to April is the dry northeast monsoon – calmer seas, more sun, and the highest rates, peaking over Christmas and New Year. Book seaplane islands early for these months, because transfers only run in daylight.
May to November is the wetter southwest monsoon. Rates drop and there's still plenty of sun between showers. It's also when manta rays and whale sharks gather at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, a short boat ride from The Nautilus.
