Adults-Only Resorts in Cancun: Hotel Zone, Costa Mujeres or the Island

"Adults-only Cancun" covers three different places: the Hotel Zone strip, the newer resort coast at Costa Mujeres north of the city, and Isla Mujeres across the bay. For most couples, the answer is the Hotel Zone and Hyatt Zilara Cancun – 18 and over, swim-up suites, and the highest Booking.com rating of the Hotel Zone adults-only resorts we checked, at a mid-range rate. Which adults-only resort in Cancun should you book?

For most trips, book Hyatt Zilara Cancun. It's in the Hotel Zone, so the airport, restaurants and nightlife are close, it sells swim-up suites, and it carries the highest Booking.com rating of the Hotel Zone adults-only resorts we checked, at a little over half of Le Blanc's rate. Check Hyatt Zilara Cancun availability early – January to March is when interest in Cancun's adults-only resorts peaks.

Hotel Zone, Costa Mujeres or Isla Mujeres?

Decide the area before the resort. The three feel nothing alike.

The Hotel Zone is shaped like a 7. The top faces a sheltered bay, and the long leg faces the open Caribbean, with surf on some days. Our Cancun beachfront guide maps which resort sits on which side.

Hyatt Zilara Cancun

The all-rounder. Hyatt Zilara Cancun sits at Km 11.5 in the Hotel Zone, with a private beach area, outdoor pools, a spa and an 18-and-over rule. It was The Royal in Cancun before the rebrand, and Booking.com still uses that name in its web address.

Booking.com sells oceanfront and ocean-view junior suites, and a King Suite with Ocean View – Swim Up. The swim-up categories are compared in swim-up rooms in Cancun.

Don't confuse it with Hyatt Ziva Cancun, its sibling at Punta Cancún, which takes children of all ages.

Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun

The luxury booking. Le Blanc says its Cancun resort is exclusively for adults 18 and over, and its plan is built around service: a personal butler, top-shelf spirits and wines, and 24-hour room service.

It's in the Hotel Zone, about 30 minutes' drive from the airport. One thing to check when you book. The entry category on Booking.com is the Royal Deluxe Lagoon View, which looks over the lagoon behind the strip. Ocean-view rooms cost more.

Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres

The quiet-beach booking. Secrets Playa Blanca sits at Costa Mujeres, the resort coast north of downtown Cancun. It's 18 and over, with nine restaurants, four outdoor pools and a private beach with cabanas.

Booking.com sells Junior Suite Swim Out rooms and a Preferred Club tier with its own swim-out and oceanfront suites.

The trade-off is location. Costa Mujeres is resorts and a golf course, so a night out means a ride into town. From around $587 a night for two. Book this one if you'd rather have a calmer stretch of sand than the strip's nightlife. Check Secrets Playa Blanca rates.

Secrets The Vine Cancun

The value booking in the Hotel Zone. Secrets The Vine stands at Km 14.5, a few steps from Playa Ballenas and about 16 km from the airport. It's 18 and over, with four outdoor pools, a private beach area and an 18-hole golf course next door.

It's on the long, open-sea leg of the 7. Expect bigger waves there than on the bay side.

Temptation Cancun Resort

The party booking. Temptation calls itself a "Playground for Grown-Ups", and the rules are its own. Guests must be 21 or over, and bikini tops are optional at the main pool, the Quiet Pool and the beach.

It's in the Hotel Zone by Playa Tortugas, about 21 km from the airport, with 428 rooms and themed parties at night. Singles are welcome. The bar pours domestic and international brands.

Two extras cost money: the airport transfer, unless you book the Master or Penthouse Suite, and room service outside the Tower and the Playful Experience package. The Tower by Temptation has its own separate Booking.com listing, so check which one you're buying.

Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets

The small-luxury booking. Impression Isla Mujeres sits on the beach on Isla Mujeres, with about 125 suites, each with butler service. It's 18 and over.

Getting there is part of the trip. You reach it by boat from Marina Hacienda del Mar on the mainland, a crossing of roughly 25 to 45 minutes depending on the source. The resort asks for your travel details a few days ahead, and rough seas can disrupt the transfer, so allow slack on arrival day.

Signature suites come with a hot tub and an ocean view. From around $1,067 a night for two. Book this one if you want a small resort where the crowds stay on the mainland. Check Impression Isla Mujeres rates.

These are adults-only too, and worth a look if the six above are full.

• Excellence Playa Mujeres – adults-only at Playa Mujeres, with seven pools and Excellence Club Junior Swim-Up Suites. We couldn't find a current Booking.com listing to price it, which is why it's not in the table. Check Excellence Playa Mujeres rates.
• ATELIER Playa Mujeres – adults-only, but Booking.com says guests over 16 are welcome, so expect older teens. Check ATELIER Playa Mujeres rates.

• Almare, a Luxury Collection Resort – an 18-and-over all-inclusive on Isla Mujeres.

Not adults-only, despite the reputation

Two names come up in every "adults-only Cancun" thread and don't qualify.

Paradisus Cancún is a family resort. Its adults-only part is The Reserve, a section of suites for guests 18 and over, inside a resort that runs a Family Concierge program and a kids' club. Hyatt Ziva Cancun welcomes children of all ages; its adults-only sibling is Zilara.

Is all-inclusive worth it in Cancun?

At these resorts, you don't get the choice: every one on this page sells all-inclusive. The real question is what the plan leaves out.

Le Blanc includes a butler and top-shelf drinks. Temptation charges for airport transfers and most room service. At Secrets resorts, the Preferred Club tier is an upgrade on top of the base plan. Read that line before you compare prices.

For most couples: Hyatt Zilara Cancun in the Hotel Zone. For a quieter beach: Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres.

When to go

Interest in Cancun's adults-only resorts peaks January to March, the dry, busy stretch, and dips September to November. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November.

That dip shows up in the rates. In our checks, a September weeknight came in cheaper than a November one at most of the resorts we priced. If you travel in hurricane season, book refundable rates.
