This is the practical answer in Sri Lanka, and geography is most of the reason. The resort sits on a clifftop above its own private beach at Tangalle, midway between Galle, two hours west, and Yala, 90 minutes east – so you can do the fort, the safari and the beach from one base instead of packing twice.
Two categories have a private pool. The Ocean View Pool Villa puts a plunge pool on a terrace facing the sea, and the Two Bedroom Garden Pool Villa is the larger, garden-set option for families or groups.
What's offshore changes with the season, and both halves are worth knowing. Whale watching runs December to April just off this coast, and turtles nest between May and October – so even the wetter half of the year has something the dry season doesn't.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge
Wild Coast holds the strongest guest rating in this guide, and it's the only property here where the pool sits beside a national park rather than a beach. The Cocoon Pool Suite is a tented suite with a sundeck facing the ocean and a private plunge pool exclusive to that suite – not shared, despite the safari-camp format.
The rate does more than usual. $1,031 all-inclusive covers all meals, drinks and afternoon tea, plus one guided game drive per day into Yala with a licensed tracker. That last detail matters more than it reads: Yala is the world's densest leopard habitat, and a tracker's knowledge is the difference between a sighting and a long drive. Leopard sightings peak November to January.
The property is a Relais & Châteaux member and listed in the Michelin Guide, run by Resplendent Ceylon – the same group behind Ceylon Tea Trails. Getting there means 3.5 hours by road from Colombo, or a domestic flight.

The choice is only about position: the Ocean Pool Suite faces the sea directly, the Ocean Hill Pool Suite sits elevated with views across the canopy, and the Garden Pool Suite is the most private. All three run from around $825.
The setting is a crescent-shaped sheltered bay at Tangalle with a private beach, and the property is classic Aman: low-rise concrete and timber pavilions, deliberately quiet. Snorkeling, kayaking and whale watching are arranged on site.
One practical note before you plan: Amanwella isn't on Booking.com or Expedia – it books directly through aman.com, which is also why it has no public guest score. Normal at this tier, but it means a conversation rather than a checkout.

Two Sri Lankan properties are frequently suggested for this search and don't qualify. Cape Weligama's villas share pools between two or three villas rather than one per villa. Shangri-La Hambantota has no private-pool category at all, only large shared pools. Both are good hotels – neither gives you water that's yours alone, so check the pool arrangement rather than the brand.

Three properties, one coastline, and that isn't a sampling accident. Every confirmed private-pool villa in Sri Lanka sits on the south coast, between Tangalle and Yala.
The season explains it. The south coast's dry window runs December to April, with calm seas, 28–32°C and whales passing offshore – which is when the luxury market here operates. The east coast has the inverse pattern, dry from May to October, and beaches every bit as good. What it doesn't have is a single confirmed private-pool property.
