Overwater Villas in the UAE: Glass Floor or Private Pool

Both of the UAE's overwater resorts are Anantara, and the choice between them is one clean swap: Dubai gives you a glass panel in the floor and no pool on the deck, Ras Al Khaimah gives you a private pool on every overwater villa and no glass. Which UAE overwater villa should you book?

Book the Over Water Pool Villa at Anantara Mina Ras Al Khaimah. It is the cheaper of the two resorts, the private pool is part of the entry overwater category rather than an upgrade, and the villa sleeps two adults plus two children – so it is the only overwater room in the country a family can actually use.

Check Anantara Mina Ras Al Khaimah dates. These are the emirate's first overwater villas and there are three categories in total, so the inventory is thin against a resort of that size.

Book Anantara The Palm instead for one specific reason: the glass floor. Dubai's villas have a viewing panel cut into the floor with lit water beneath it, which Ras Al Khaimah does not offer, and they sit on the Palm Jumeirah with the city skyline across the water. You give up the private pool to get it.

Anantara Mina Ras Al Khaimah Resort

The resort – recently renamed from Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah – sits on a private peninsula inside the Mina Al Arab development, with the Arabian Gulf on one side and protected mangroves on the other. That geography is the thing to understand before booking, because it decides what your villa looks at.

Three overwater categories, and all three have a private pool:

• Over Water Pool Villa – 82 m² / 882 sq ft, two adults and two children, private terrace, expansive sun deck, separate living room.
• Two Bedroom Anantara Over Water Pool Villa – 206 m² / 2,217 sq ft, four adults and three children, sea views.
• Two Bedroom Royal Over Water Pool Villa – 365 m² / 3,927 sq ft, the largest overwater room in the country, with an indoor-outdoor bathroom.

The caveat is in the entry villa's own description: sea or mangrove views. The 82 m² category can face either, and a mangrove channel is a different proposition from the open Gulf. If the view is what you are paying for, ask which side your villa number sits on before you confirm.

Overwater guests also get a reserved cabana on a villa-only beach. The wider resort runs six dining venues and an Anantara Spa with seven treatment rooms, and Al Hamra Mall and Marina are about ten minutes away. Ras Al Khaimah's draw beyond the resort is Jebel Jais – hiking, the zipline, the toboggan – which is a genuinely different day out from anything in Dubai.

Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort

Anantara built the UAE's first over water villas here, on the East Crescent of the Palm Jumeirah, and there are 18 of them across a 293-room Thai-styled resort with a private beach, three pools and four restaurants.

The One Bedroom Over Water Villa is 106 m² / 1,141 sq ft, sleeps up to three adults on a king bed, and its defining feature is the glass viewing panel set into the floor – Anantara's own copy is about watching fish dart underneath the villa through it. Add a bathtub positioned for the view, a private terrace, a separate tub and rain shower, dual vanities and Villa Host service throughout the stay.

What it does not have is a pool. At this resort the private pools are on the beach villas, on the sand – the One Bedroom Beach Pool Villa and the two-bedroom version – not on the overwater decks. It is the same pattern as Fiji's Likuliku and most of the Sandals overwater range: the pool and the water under the floor are sold as alternatives, not as a package.

The compensation is location. This is a resort you can reach from Dubai International in well under an hour, on an island with the city skyline across the lagoon, in a country where you can be on a ski slope or in a desert camp the same week.

Two resorts, one decision

The UAE is a two-resort market and both belong to the same brand, which makes this one of the cleanest choices in the whole category. Ras Al Khaimah is the better overwater room; Dubai is the better overwater view. RAK gives you a private pool as standard, more space per dirham, a family option and a quieter emirate. Dubai gives you the glass floor, the Palm, and everything a two-hour radius of that address contains.

If neither the pool nor the glass is negotiable, that combination exists – but not here. What to do beyond the villa

A villa built over the water tends to come with an appetite for more of it. For a first look at the coastline these villas sit on, the 90-minute speedboat circuit runs from the Marina past Ain Dubai, the Palm, Atlantis and the Burj Al Arab in one go – the skyline from the side it was designed to be seen from.

Evenings suit a dinner cruise from Dubai Marina, 90 minutes with a served buffet and live music, or the abra on Burj Lake, which puts you at water level for the Dubai Fountain for about the price of a coffee. Slower days suit the day yacht tour with a BBQ.

And the one thing in the city that ignores the weather entirely is Deep Dive Dubai – an indoor pool 60 m deep with a furnished sunken city at the bottom, bookable in August at 45°C.

When to go

November to March is the season, and it is not a close call. Daytime temperatures sit in the mid-20s°C, the Gulf is warm and calm, and a villa with an outdoor deck is usable all day. It is also peak pricing, and with 18 overwater villas in Dubai and three categories in Ras Al Khaimah, the inventory is small enough that dates decide the outcome more than budget does.

April and October are the shoulder months – hot but workable, with rates noticeably softer than the winter peak. Early April and late October are the sweet spots.

June to September is brutal on an outdoor deck, with daytime highs regularly above 40°C and high humidity on the coast. Rates fall a long way, and if you are booking then, the Ras Al Khaimah villas make more sense than the Dubai ones – a private pool is the only thing that makes a summer terrace usable.
