At around $1,055 before tax, Secret Bay costs more than Calabash in Grenada or Stonefield in St Lucia, both of which put a private pool in every category too, on islands with beaches you'd actually spend the day on. Dominica has almost no white sand. Buying this rate purely for a pool is the wrong purchase.

If you want Dominica, then yes, and it isn't close. The Nature Isle is the Caribbean's hiking-and-diving island – rainforest, waterfalls, boiling lakes, some of the region's best wall diving – and Secret Bay is the only property that pairs that with a villa you'd want to come back to at 17:00. Nothing else on the island competes at this level, so the premium isn't really a premium over local alternatives. It's the price of the only door.

The setting drives the design. It's steep jungle, so the resort runs an on-site funicular to move guests around rather than expecting them to climb. There's an oceanfront lap pool with a bar, a treehouse-style spa above Tibay Beach, a yoga pavilion suspended over the Cario River, and three dining options from beachfront to a garden chef's table.

Know the terrain before you commit. This is paths, steps and jungle rather than flat resort grounds – wonderful if that's the point, tiring if you wanted to shuffle from room to sunlounger. Why Dominica has exactly one private pool hotel

One property is a strange number, and it isn't because the island was overlooked. It's because Dominica sells something that doesn't need a resort.

The Nature Isle built its tourism on ecotourism, diving and rainforest hiking rather than beach development, and the island's volcanic coastline is mostly dark sand and rock rather than the white powder that makes a big resort viable. Without white sand, nobody built the 300-room beachfront blocks that later grow private-pool villa wings elsewhere in the Caribbean. What arrived instead was small, independent and eco-led.

Hurricane Maria in 2017 is part of the picture too. The island took catastrophic damage and rebuilt around resilience rather than scale, which reinforced the same pattern: fewer, smaller, better properties instead of more of them.

When to go

February through June is Dominica's dry season and the window to target: the rainforest interior, the waterfalls and the dive sites are all at their most accessible, and the trails aren't running with mud.

July through January is wetter, and it overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks August through October. Dominica sits inside the main track rather than south of it, so that risk is real here in a way it isn't in Grenada.

One expectation to set regardless of month. This is a mountainous rainforest island, so showers are common even in the drier season – they pass quickly, but a week of unbroken sun isn't what Dominica sells. If that's the requirement, it's the wrong island, and the private pool won't fix it.
