Hawaii has four confirmed properties across three islands where a private pool comes with the villa, bungalow or suite, not shared with other guests. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on the Big Island has the deepest confirmed private-pool inventory, followed by Mauna Lani's five standalone bungalows, Timbers Kauai's Lāola Residences and the all-villa Fairmont Kea Lani property on Maui.

Best Overall

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

Kaʻūpūlehu, Kailua-Kona, Big Islandfrom from $1,250/night; Kahuwai Suite and Ho'onanea Villa with private pool from around $3,500+, Makaloa Villa (3-bedroom) around $18,000
Kahuwai Suite (infinity-edge private pool and hot tub on an extended lanai) · Ho'onanea Villa (private pool, spa, daybed swing and firepit) · Makaloa Villa (3-bedroom, private pool, spa, daybed swing and firepit)

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai sits on the Kona-Kohala Coast of Hawaii Island, its bungalow-style guest rooms carved into black volcanic rock with ocean views throughout. Three of its villa and suite categories carry confirmed private pools rather than shared resort access: the Kahuwai Suite, a one- or two-bedroom category with an infinity-edge private pool on an extended lanai overlooking Kumukea Beach; the Ho'onanea Villa, with its own pool, spa and daybed swing; and the three-bedroom Makaloa Villa, the resort's most exclusive private-pool category with the same pool, spa and firepit setup at a larger scale.

The resort's separately named Hawai'i Loa Villa includes a private whirlpool rather than a swimming pool, so it doesn't meet the private-pool bar used across this guide. Rates for the confirmed private-pool categories run from roughly $3,500 a night for the Kahuwai Suite up to around $18,000 for the Makaloa Villa at peak season, well above the resort's general room rates.

Four Seasons Hualalai is a AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five Star property, one of only two resorts on Hawaii Island to hold both ratings, with seven pools total including the exclusive King's Pond marine aquarium. Kona International Airport (KOA) is roughly 20–30 minutes away by road.

Three separate confirmed private-pool categories, more than any other Hawaii property on this list
AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five Star rated, the only resort with both on Hawaii Island
King's Pond, a 1.8-million-gallon swimmable saltwater aquarium, is exclusive to Hualalai guests
Among the highest confirmed rates in Hawaii – Makaloa Villa runs well into five figures per night
Hawai'i Loa Villa has a private whirlpool, not a full pool, so it's excluded as a private-pool category
Kona International Airport transfers can take 20–30 minutes depending on traffic on Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway
Most Exclusive

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection

Kohala Coast, Big Islandfrom from $829/night; the five Bungalows with private pool and spa run from around $5,500+
Bungalow – one of five 4,000 sqft, two-bedroom units (three directly on the beach) with a private pool, spa, private entrance and butler's kitchen

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection occupies a 34-acre oceanfront site on the Big Island's Kohala Coast, with 14 room categories ranging from standard oceanview rooms up to its five standalone Bungalows. Each Bungalow is a 4,000 sqft, two-master-suite unit with its own private pool and spa, a private entrance, gated driveway and a dedicated butler running the in-unit kitchen; three of the five sit directly on the beach.

This is the smallest confirmed private-pool inventory in Hawaii on a per-unit basis – only five Bungalows exist at the entire resort – making it the pick for travelers who want maximum exclusivity over a wider room selection. Rates for the Bungalows run from around $5,500 a night, well above the property's general room rates.

Mauna Lani reopened in 2020 after a 15-month renovation and includes two golf courses, a spa with a watsu pool and direct beach access. Kailua-Kona is roughly 40 minutes away by road.

Best on Kauai

Timbers Kauai Ocean Club & Residences

Hōkūala, Lihue, Kauaifrom from $1,091/night; Lāola Residences with private plunge pool typically run higher
Lāola Residence – 3- or 4-bedroom bi-level townhome above the resort's 15th hole, with a private plunge pool, folding glass walls and outdoor shower

Timbers Kauai is the only confirmed private-pool property on Kauai in this guide, part of the 450-acre Hōkūala community on the island's east side. The resort has four residence categories – Maliulā, Kaiholo, Lāola and Lāola Nani – but only the Lāola Residences are confirmed with a private plunge pool as standard; the other three categories offer private lanais and ocean or mountain views without a dedicated pool.

Lāola Residences are three- or four-bedroom, bi-level townhomes perched above the resort's oceanfront 15th hole, with folding glass walls and an outdoor shower alongside the private plunge pool. The wider property earned a MICHELIN Key for two consecutive years and sits a 6-minute walk from Kalapaki Beach.

Lihue Airport (LIH) is the closest of any property in this guide, a few minutes' drive from the resort.

Best on Maui

The Villas at Fairmont Kea Lani

Wailea, Mauifrom from $1,000/night
Villa – all 37 two- or three-bedroom, two-story villas (1,800–2,200 sqft) include a private courtyard with a plunge pool

The Villas at Fairmont Kea Lani sit within Hawaii's only all-suite and villa oceanfront resort, a short walk from Polo Beach in Wailea, Maui. All 37 villas – two- or three-bedroom, two-story layouts of 1,800–2,200 sqft – include a private courtyard with its own plunge pool and barbecue grill, alongside a full kitchen and separate living area, with no non-pool villa category at the property.

This is the most accessible confirmed private-pool inventory on Maui in this guide, with every villa carrying the same pool as standard rather than a single top-tier category. Villa stays include daily breakfast at Kea Lani Restaurant, with the number of included breakfasts scaling by villa size.

Kahului Airport (OGG) is roughly 30–40 minutes away by road, depending on traffic through Kihei.

When to go

April–May and September–October are Hawaii's shoulder seasons, with lower rates than the winter peak (mid-December through March) and summer school-holiday crowds (June–August), while weather across all three islands stays reliably warm year-round. The Big Island's Kona-Kohala Coast, home to Four Seasons Hualalai and Mauna Lani, is Hawaii's driest region, sheltered from the trade-wind rain that affects windward coasts. Kauai's east side, where Timbers Kauai sits, and Maui's Wailea coast, home to Fairmont Kea Lani, both see their own dry, leeward microclimates. Fly into Kona International Airport (KOA) for the Big Island, Lihue Airport (LIH) for Kauai, or Kahului Airport (OGG) for Maui – there is no single gateway for all three islands, so a Hawaii private-pool trip covering more than one property typically means an inter-island flight.
