Okinawa's private-pool villas are mostly not on Okinawa. The main island has two properties and nine villas between them. The depth is 300 km southwest on Miyakojima and Irabu, where Rosewood opened 55 villas in March 2025 and a neighboring resort runs roughly 85 private-pool suites – the largest concentration in Japan. Which island you choose matters more here than which hotel.

Three more resorts sell a genuine private-pool category but do not publish a rate for it publicly – HOSHINOYA Okinawa, Shigira Bayside Suite ALLAMANDA and IRAPH SUI. They are covered in full below, with booking links, and one of them has more private-pool rooms than everything else on this page combined. Which Okinawa private pool villa should you book?
Decide the island first. The main island – Naha airport, the Churaumi Aquarium, Cape Manzamo, direct international flights – has two private-pool properties and only nine villas between them. Miyakojima and Irabu, an hour's flight further southwest, have clearer water, better beaches, vastly more villa inventory and much less to do beyond the beach.
For most trips, book Rosewood Miyakojima. All 55 of its villas have a private plunge pool, which makes it the only property here where getting one is likely rather than lucky. Check Rosewood availability – it opened in March 2025 and is the newest luxury product in the prefecture.
If you want the main island's sightseeing, book Halekulani Okinawa's Cliff Villa – the only villa in Okinawa with both a private heated pool and its own natural hot spring.

Category names don't tell you there's a pool. HOSHINOYA's Tida has one and its Tin, Haru and Fushi don't; only nine of IRAPH SUI's suites do; around half of ALLAMANDA's rooms do. Book the named category, never the property.
Rosewood Miyakojima
The newest and, for most people, the most practical answer. Rosewood Miyakojima opened on 5 March 2025 with 55 villas, every one of them with a private pool – a claim confirmed three ways: by Rosewood itself, by Booking.com's property description ("Each room includes a private pool") and by Expedia's ("55 rooms, all featuring private plunge pools").
Four villa categories, each with a private pool, a garden and unobstructed sea views:
- Oceanview and Beachfront – around 60 m².
- Deluxe Oceanview and Deluxe Beachfront – around 90 m².
Above them sit three two-bedroom houses – Kuura, Upra and Kamii – each with a private pool, a service kitchen and a dining area. Kuura is 150 m².
The significance is arithmetic. Halekulani has five villas, HOSHINOYA four, The Shigira fewer than twenty. Rosewood has fifty-five, all with pools. If you have already chosen your dates rather than being able to move them, this is where you will actually find a villa.
Base villas run roughly $1,050 to $1,650 depending on season – the low end in the quieter months, the high end over summer and the New Year period. Not cheap, and roughly mid-pack for what is on this page.

Halekulani Okinawa
Halekulani is the Hawaiian luxury name transplanted to Onna on the main island's west coast, and it is a large resort – 360 rooms and suites – with a very small villa count attached.
There are five villas, in two categories, both confirmed on the hotel's own site:
- Cliff Villa (One Bedroom) – 83 m², for one to three guests, with a "private heated swimming pool and natural hot spring (onsen)".
- Halekulani Cliff Villa (Two Bedroom) – 165 m², for up to four, with a "private heated swimming pool and bath fed by a natural hot spring".
The onsen is the differentiator. Nothing else on this page gives you a private pool and a private hot spring bath in the same villa, and on a subtropical island where sea temperatures make swimming marginal from December to March, the hot spring is what makes a Cliff Villa a year-round proposition rather than a summer one.
Villas here open around $1,000, against entry rooms at roughly a third of that. The rest of the resort is ordinary luxury-hotel accommodation with no pool of its own, so the villa category is the entire reason to choose it for this trip.

The Shigira
The Shigira sits on a cape on Miyakojima's southern shore, inside the wider Shigira Seven Miles Resort area, and it is a Small Luxury Hotels member. Accounts of its size vary between eight and seventeen rooms depending on the source, which tells you most of what you need to know: it is very small, and every room is a villa with its own pool.
Its own description of the experience is the clearest statement of what you are buying: "you can step out of bed and slip into your private swimming pool."
Four suite-villa categories, all with a private pool:
- Suite Villa Bay Front and Suite Villa Bay Front (2-Bedroom), the larger at 116 m².
- Ocean View Suite Villa and Ocean View Premier Suite Villa (2-Bedroom).
It is also the most expensive stay on this page, opening around $2,120. You are paying for a private bay, a handful of neighbors and the highest level of service on Miyakojima.

The three that don't publish a villa rate
These three sell a confirmed private-pool category, and in one case a remarkable number of them. None publishes a rate for that specific category through a booking site, so none gets a row in the table above – we don't print a price we can't tie to the room. The links go to the right listings.
Shigira Bayside Suite ALLAMANDA
This is the most under-reported property in Okinawa. It is a different hotel from The Shigira, in the same Shigira resort area, and it is far larger: 174 rooms, of which roughly 85 are Pool Villa Royal Suites and Pool Villa Lagoon Suites with their own private pool.
That is more private-pool rooms than every other property on this page combined, and very likely the largest concentration of private-pool hotel rooms in Japan.
- Pool Villa Lagoon Suite – 60 m², with "private pools, daybeds, whirlpools, terraces, and gazebos".
- Pool Villa Royal Suite – 90 m².
- The Premier House – a private pool, sleeping four.
Two corrections to claims that circulate about it. It is not adults-only – children are welcome, with an age minimum on one specific floor of one category. And it is an all-suite property, so the entry rate quoted for it is not a garden room, though it may well not be a pool suite either.
Book this one if you are traveling with children, or if every boutique villa property on the island is already full. Check ALLAMANDA rates – confirm the category name starts with "Pool Villa", because around half the property doesn't have one.
HOSHINOYA Okinawa
HOSHINOYA is Hoshino Resorts' luxury line, and its Yomitan property on the main island has the largest private pool in this guide by a wide margin.
The villa category is Tida – "sun" in the Okinawan dialect. Each is a 250 m² standalone villa with a 20-meter private pool, heated for year-round use, and direct beach access. There are four Tida suites among 100 rooms, and Hoshino sells them as the finest suite in the entire HOSHINOYA brand.
The other three categories – Fushi, for families and groups; Haru, with a terrace living room; and Tin, alongside the sea – have no private pool. The names give you no clue, so book by name and check.
A 20-meter heated pool is a genuinely different product from a plunge pool. This is the one property here where you can swim lengths without leaving your villa.
Book this one if the pool is the point and you want to swim in it rather than sit in it. Check HOSHINOYA rates – four villas in a 100-room resort, so ask about Tida specifically.
IRAPH SUI, a Luxury Collection Hotel
IRAPH SUI sits on Irabu Island, reached from Miyakojima by the Irabu Bridge – at 3.5 km, Japan's longest toll-free bridge, and a genuinely good drive.
Most of this hotel has no pool. Nine suites among its 58 rooms and suites have a private plunge pool; the 10 Junior Suites, the Executive Suite and the beachfront sea-view rooms do not. The pool suites include a Garden Corner Executive Suite with a partial ocean view and a private pool. The sea-view rooms that dominate the listings are not what you are looking for.
Its Booking.com URL is a long transliterated string beginning irahu-sui-raguziyuarikorekusiyonhoteru – that is the genuine listing, not a broken link.
The reason to choose it over Rosewood or The Shigira is Marriott: it is a Luxury Collection property, so points and elite status apply, which none of the others offer.

One more, under a new name
JIVANA Miyako is a seven-suite property that opened in April 2024 as AYANNA Miyako and has since rebranded – the old ayanna-miyako.com now redirects to the JIVANA site. If you find a guide recommending AYANNA, this is the same place.
Its categories are the Executive Suite, Sauna Suite and Junior Suite, and it is expanding to 14 rooms by June 2027. Third-party listings describe a heated private pool with the Sauna Suite, but JIVANA's own site doesn't currently confirm a private pool per category, so it stays off both lists above. Worth watching as it grows.
Main island or Miyakojima
The honest summary of this market: the main island has the flights and the sightseeing, and Miyakojima has the villas and the water.
Naha (OKA) is a major airport with direct international flights, and the main island gives you the Churaumi Aquarium, the Shuri Castle site, Cape Manzamo and a real road network. What it doesn't give you is villa inventory – nine private-pool villas across two hotels, five of them at one address.
Miyako (MMY) is an hour's domestic flight further southwest. The beaches are dramatically better – Yonaha Maehama in particular – the water is clearer, and between Rosewood, ALLAMANDA, The Shigira and IRAPH SUI there are roughly 150 rooms with a pool of their own. There is also much less to do that isn't the beach or your own pool, which for this kind of trip is usually the point.
If your dates are fixed, start with Rosewood Miyakojima and treat ALLAMANDA as the fallback – between them they hold the great majority of Okinawa's private-pool inventory.
For deeper private-pool markets elsewhere in Asia, private pool villas in Koh Samui and Bali both have many times Okinawa's inventory at a fraction of the rate. Private pool villas in Phuket is the deepest of the three.
When to go
April to June is the best window: warm enough to swim, before the June rainy season peaks and well ahead of typhoon season. October and November are the other good stretch – warm sea, low rainfall, and no typhoons in most years.
July through September is peak heat and peak typhoon risk. Okinawa and Miyakojima sit directly in the western Pacific typhoon track, and a direct hit closes the airports. Build slack into the itinerary if you travel then.
December through March is mild by Japanese standards but too cool for comfortable sea swimming, which is when a heated private pool earns its rate – HOSHINOYA's Tida pool and Halekulani's Cliff Villas are heated year-round, and Halekulani's onsen makes winter genuinely viable.
Naha (OKA) serves the main island; Miyako (MMY) serves Miyakojima and, over the Irabu Bridge, Irabu Island.
