Banyan Tree Samui

Every villa on this property has a pool. All 88 of them, from the entry Ocean View Pool Villa to the Presidential, each with its own 35 sqm private infinity pool – there is no standard hotel room at Banyan Tree Samui. Whatever you book, you get the pool.

Move up the tiers and the Royal Banyan Ocean Pool Villa, the Family Deluxe and Family Ocean Pool Villas and the Presidential add a separate heated jet pool alongside the infinity pool, plus bigger covered pavilions. The setting is a secluded stretch of Lamai Bay on the south coast, a protected shallow cove that's good for swimming and snorkeling straight off the sand.

The trade is nightlife. Lamai is the quieter of Samui's two main strips, with its own restaurants at a smaller scale, and Chaweng or Bophut is 25–30 minutes by road. If your evenings are the point of the trip, that's a real cost. If they aren't, the south coast is the better side of the island.

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

The splurge, and the highest-rated resort on this list. Four Seasons sits on Samui's northwest coast, and every villa category on its own list comes with a private infinity pool – from the entry Serenity Pool Villa, about 103 m² with its pool looking out over the Gulf and the islands, up through Island Ocean and Oceanfront Pool Villas.

Families have their own tier. The Family Pool Villa has a 15 sqm infinity pool, and the hillside Residence Villas, up to four bedrooms, add kitchenettes and a residential assistant.

Conrad Koh Samui

The sunset booking. Conrad sits on a west-facing cliff at Taling Ngam, at the island's southwest tip, and all 82 villas have their own 10-meter infinity pool with the same sea view. One- to three-bedroom villas step down the slope on stilts above the jungle.

Know what you're giving up. The beach is barely there – a small artificial strip below the main pool that shrinks to a sliver at high tide. The resort is steep, you'll ride buggies everywhere, and the airport is about 29 km away.

Six Senses Samui

Six Senses is built into a hillside above Choeng Mon on the northeast tip, and the views are the reason to come: villas step down the slope, each with an 18 sqm private infinity pool framing the water. 59 of the resort's 66 villas have one.

The entry Hideaway Pool Villa sits at the top of the property with partial ocean views; Ocean View, Ocean Front and Ocean Front Pool Villa Suite move progressively closer to the sea with larger decks.

Now the trap, and it's an expensive one. The resort's cheapest category is the "Hideaway Villa" – no "Pool" in the name, and no pool on the deck. It reads almost identically to the Hideaway Pool Villa on a booking page. Only the categories with "Pool" in the name include one.

Choeng Mon itself is a quieter beach a short drive from both Chaweng and Bophut, so you're not cut off. Book this one if the hillside ocean panorama is what you're paying for – and confirm the words "Pool Villa" on the reservation. Check Six Senses rates.

Anantara Bophut

This is the one you book to walk out to dinner. Anantara sits at the edge of Fisherman's Village, Koh Samui's most walkable dining and nightlife strip – no taxi, no resort-restaurant fatigue on night three.

Both pool categories are genuinely private, which keeps it in the low-risk column. The Garden Pool Suite has a 14 sqm private pool set in landscaped gardens; the Beachfront Pool Suite swaps the garden for direct beach frontage and a private plunge pool reached through its own archway. Bophut is on the north coast, roughly 15–20 minutes from the airport.

The rate is the honest catch – from $900, more than double Banyan Tree's entry, for a suite rather than a villa. You're paying for the address. Book this one if walking to restaurants matters more to you than the size of the pool. Check Anantara Bophut rates.

Silavadee Pool Spa Resort

The mid-price option – with a naming trap of its own. Silavadee sits on the rocky coast near Lamai, with 80 rooms and villas in total. Its Pool Villa categories – Tropical, Partial Ocean View, Scenic Ocean View, Ocean Front and the two-bedroom duplexes – each have a private pool.

The two cheapest categories don't. The Jacuzzi Deluxe and Ocean View Jacuzzi Deluxe rooms, in a three-story building at the top of the resort, have a jacuzzi, not a pool. With "Pool" in the resort's own name, that's an easy one to get wrong.

Melati Beach Resort

From $221 a night, this is the cheapest confirmed private pool villa on Koh Samui – roughly half Banyan Tree's entry rate and a quarter of Anantara's. The Pool Villa is a one-bedroom layout with its own swimming pool and an outdoor sun terrace, and larger tiers – Pool Villa Suite, Family Pool Villa, Presidential Suite – scale up for groups.

It sits on Thongson Bay, a private cove near Choeng Mon that most of the island's traffic never reaches. That seclusion is the appeal and the limitation in the same breath: there's very little outside the resort, and Chaweng is about 15 minutes away by taxi when you want dinner elsewhere.

Book this one if the private pool is non-negotiable but the budget is. Check Melati Beach rates – it's the entry point to this category on Samui, so it's also the first to sell out in the December–March window.

Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui

The Ritz-Carlton holds a private bay across 58 acres of former coconut plantation at the island's northern tip – one of the most resort-scale properties in this guide. The clifftop Ultimate Pool Villa has an 18 sqm pool with panoramic ocean views and sits at the very top of Samui's price range, from around $2,500.

The Exclusive Pool Villa, from around $1,200, is the more accessible way into the private-pool inventory, with a separate living area and ocean or resort views.

What the acreage buys is everything else: a Muay Thai ring, tennis courts, and a spa village with eight treatment suites. Choeng Mon's beach is shared with Six Senses nearby, but the Ritz-Carlton's own bay is private.

Sareeraya Villas and Suites

Sareeraya is the only confirmed private-pool property directly on Chaweng Beach, Samui's main strip – and it's at the quiet north end, so you get walking access to the restaurants and bars without sleeping above them. From around $250, it's also one of the cheaper confirmed pools on the island, and under 2 km from the airport, the shortest transfer here by a wide margin.

Read the category name carefully. The "Villa" category has a private plunge pool (sea or lotus-pond view, subject to availability). The separate "Suite" categories have a terrace or an outdoor Jacuzzi – not a private pool. Same property, same booking page, completely different product.

Why the cheapest room at a Koh Samui pool resort often has no pool

It's a topography problem before it's a marketing one. Samui's coast rises fast into hills, so the resorts that trade on views – Six Senses on its slope, the Ritz-Carlton on its clifftop – are built on terraced plots where each pool is its own small engineering job, cut into the hillside and plumbed uphill.

That makes the pool a tier rather than a standard. A resort carves pools into the buildable plots and sells the rest of its rooms without one, which is exactly how you end up with a Hideaway Villa and a Hideaway Pool Villa on the same page.

Banyan Tree, Four Seasons and Conrad are the exceptions because they committed at the design stage: every villa gets a pool, and there's no other category. It also explains the size differences across this list – the flat, walkable, beach-level properties run small plunge pools around 14 sqm at Anantara, while the hillside resorts get the bigger infinity decks. Flat land near the restaurants is expensive; hillside land isn't.

When to go

December to March is Koh Samui's dry season and the best window for a pool villa: low humidity, little rain, calm seas. It's also the busiest, so it's the one to book early.

Here's the part travelers get wrong. Koh Samui sits on the Gulf of Thailand side and runs an inverted monsoon compared with Phuket and the Andaman coast. October and November are Samui's wettest months – precisely when the Andaman side is drying out. If you're planning a two-island trip, the two coasts are rarely at their best in the same week.

April to September is hot but generally dry, with July and August a secondary high season driven by European and Australian travelers. One logistical note: Samui's airport (USM) is small and serves fewer long-haul routes than Bangkok or Phuket, so most itineraries connect through Bangkok – build the extra leg into your dates before you lock the villa.

What to do beyond the pool

A private pool covers the mornings; the water outside the resort covers the rest of the trip.
