At the lodges below, every suite comes with its own plunge pool, and all four sell online. Royal Malewane in Thornybush is the benchmark. Simbambili in the Sabi Sand is the pick if leopards matter most.

Which Kruger private pool lodge should you book?
Choose the reserve before the lodge. The Sabi Sand shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park and is famous for leopards. Thornybush sits further north, a short drive from Hoedspruit airport.

Kruger is a malaria area. Speak to a travel clinic about antimalarials before you go. The dry winter months carry the lowest risk.
Royal Malewane
The honeymoon booking.
Royal Malewane is The Royal Portfolio's safari property in the Thornybush reserve. It's now a group of lodges – Malewane Lodge, Waterside, Farmstead and Masiya's Camp – plus private houses.
The flagship Malewane Lodge closed in January 2026 for a five-month structural refurbishment and reopened in July. It has eight suites:
- Six Luxury Suites, each with a new entrance hall, upgraded deck and a retiled, heated private pool
- Two Royal Suites, redesigned with private courtyard entrances, underfloor heating and heated pools
The spa was rebuilt at the same time, with a sauna and cold plunge added.
Heated matters here. Winter mornings in the bush are cold.

Simbambili Game Lodge
The leopard booking.
Simbambili belongs to the Thornybush group, but it sits in the Sabi Sand, the reserve best known for leopard sightings. The main lodge overlooks a waterhole that draws elephants through the day.
It has nine suites, each with a private deck, a plunge pool and a shaded sala bed. Two are bigger and more secluded:
- The Honeymoon Suite, with an outdoor shower
- The Waterhole Suite, facing the waterhole
Rates start from around R27,000 per person, roughly $1,500. Children from 12 are welcome.

Saseka Tented Camp
The design booking.
Saseka is Thornybush's design-led camp, on a bend of the dry Monwana River. "Tented" undersells it. These are large canvas suites with a clean, modern fit-out.
There are eight tented suites for two, each with a private deck over the riverbed, an outdoor shower and its own plunge pool. The camp adds a gym, a sauna and a lap pool.
Rates start from around R28,000 per person, roughly $1,500. Children from 12 are welcome.
It's also a short transfer from Hoedspruit (HDS), the closest airport to Thornybush.

Lion Sands Narina Lodge
The river booking.
Narina is one of the Lion Sands lodges in the Sabi Sand, raised above the Sabie River. The river runs all year, so in the dry months elephants and buffalo come down to drink in front of the lodge.
It has nine suites on stilts, linked by wooden walkways. Each is about 80 m² with a private deck, a lounge, an outdoor shower and a private plunge pool looking out over the water.

The famous lodges we left out
Several of the region's best-known names have private plunge pools. We didn't find them sold as rooms on the booking sites we link to, so they're not in the table.
- Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge – 13 suites built into the earth, each with a private plunge pool. Booked through Sabi Sabi's own reservations and safari specialists.
- Chitwa Chitwa – six lake-view suites, each with its own plunge pool. Booked direct or through safari agents.
- Singita, Londolozi and MalaMala – the Sabi Sand's biggest names, sold mainly through their own reservations and specialists, and often booked far ahead.
A lodge to double-check
Thornybush Game Lodge turns up in a lot of guides as having Family Suites with a plunge pool. Thornybush's own page for the lodge now lists 15 suites and doesn't mention a plunge pool.
If you're drawn to it, ask the lodge directly before booking. For a guaranteed pool in the same reserve, book Saseka instead.
Sabi Sand or Thornybush
The Sabi Sand has the leopards and the bigger names. Simbambili and Narina are both here, and it borders Kruger with no fence between.
Thornybush is closer to Hoedspruit, so transfers are shorter. Royal Malewane and Saseka are both here.
If you can book only one, book Royal Malewane – or Simbambili if a leopard sighting matters more than the lodge itself.

When to go
May to September is the dry season and the best for game viewing. The bush thins out, animals gather at waterholes and rivers, and malaria risk is lowest. Mornings are cold, which is when a heated pool earns its place.
October to April is the green season. It's hot and humid, with afternoon storms, newborn animals and thicker bush that makes sightings harder. It's also when a plunge pool gets the most use.
Airports: Hoedspruit (HDS) is closest to Thornybush. For the Sabi Sand, fly to Skukuza (SZK) or Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP), or take a light aircraft to a lodge airstrip.
