In Oman you pick a region before you pick a hotel. Musandam is an exclave behind UAE territory, Salalah needs its own flight, and Jabal Akhdar needs a four-wheel drive – you cannot combine two of these on a short trip. Six resorts sell a villa with a pool of its own, and Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is the one to book if the mountain is why you're coming.

That is a spread of nearly ten times between the cheapest and the most expensive, and the two cheapest are both in Dhofar, the far south – a region most Oman itineraries skip. The private pool villas hub runs the same test elsewhere.
Which Oman resort should you book?
Book Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar. Its One Bedroom Garden Pool Villa is around 177 m² from roughly $850, it has six private-pool tiers – more choice than anything else here – and the Cliff Pool Villas put your pool on the edge of a canyon two kilometers above sea level, which is the reason people come to Oman rather than the Gulf coast. Check Anantara availability – its Premier and Deluxe Canyon View Rooms are several hundred dollars cheaper and have no pool.
If the rate decides it, book Alila Hinu Bay in the far south at less than half Anantara's entry. If you have two nights and no time to leave the capital, book Jumeirah Muscat Bay. If you want the single most distinctive arrival in the country, book Six Senses Zighy Bay.

Al Baleed Salalah sells a One-Bedroom Villa and a One Bedroom Lagoon View Villa at the same 175 m² as its pool villas, a few hundred dollars cheaper, with no private pool. The word that matters is Pool, not Villa.
Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort
The best all-round answer in Oman, on the Saiq Plateau at around 2,000 m in the Al Hajar range, two hours inland from Muscat. Access is four-wheel drive only – the road up is restricted, which is worth arranging before you arrive rather than at the rental desk.
Six categories carry a private pool: the One Bedroom Garden Pool Villa (177 m², from roughly $850), the One Bedroom Deluxe Garden Pool Villa, the One Bedroom Cliff Pool Villa (188 m²), the One Bedroom Anantara Cliff Pool Villa, and two-bedroom Garden and Deluxe Garden Pool Villas at around 308 m².
The distinction that costs money is garden versus cliff. Cliff Pool Villas sit on the canyon edge – you swim to your own infinity edge and look down into the gorge – and run several hundred dollars above the garden equivalents. The Premier and Deluxe Canyon View Rooms are cheaper still and have no private pool at all.

Alila Hinu Bay
The value answer, and the one most Oman lists leave out. Alila Hinu Bay sits at Mirbat in southern Dhofar, on the Arabian Sea beneath the Dhofar mountains, with 16 pool villas among its 112 rooms.
Three categories are pool villas: the Pool Villa with King Bed and Pool Villa with Twin Beds at around 166 m² from roughly $416, and the Deluxe Pool Villa at around 175 m². The resort's own material confirms each villa has its own plunge pool and outdoor bath, separate from the two shared saltwater pools.
Two honest caveats. Booking.com's room facilities do not list the private pool on these categories – the operator's description is what confirms it, and it's the same metadata gap Alila's other Oman property has. And Mirbat is about 90 km from Salalah airport, roughly an hour along the coast, so this is not the convenient Salalah option.

Jumeirah Muscat Bay
The capital option, and the fix for the biggest gap in most Oman roundups. Jumeirah Muscat Bay sits in a cove near Qantab, a short drive from Muscat and Al-Bustan, which makes it the only property here you can reach without a domestic flight or a mountain road.
It also has the deepest review base of any resort in this guide by a wide margin, and six private-pool categories: four Summerhouse variants at around 145–150 m² – with Pool, with Garden and Pool, with Pool and Ocean View, with Garden and Pool and Ocean View – from roughly $1,909, plus the Sanctuary Ocean Villa with Garden and Pool at around 176 m² and a Four Bedroom Ocean Villa with Garden and Pool at around 299 m².
Everything below the Summerhouses – Resort, Garden and Ocean Deluxe Rooms, the Club Room, and the one-bedroom Family and Panoramic Suites – shares the resort's three pools.

Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara
The easy south. Al Baleed sits between a private beach and a freshwater lagoon in Salalah itself, about 15 minutes from Salalah International Airport – a completely different proposition from Alila Hinu Bay's hour up the coast.
Five categories have a private pool: the One Bedroom Garden View Pool Villa (175 m², from roughly $1,117), the One Bedroom Lagoon View Pool Villa, the Two Bedroom Garden View Pool Villa (239 m²), the One Bedroom Beach Pool Villa, and the Three-Bedroom Royal Beach Villa at around 629 m².
This is the property where the trap in this article lives. The One-Bedroom Villa and One Bedroom Lagoon View Villa are the same 175 m², sit a few hundred dollars cheaper on the same page, and have no pool. If you sort by price and take the first thing called a villa, you will get the wrong one.

Six Senses Zighy Bay
The most distinctive stay in Oman, and geographically the strangest. Zighy Bay is on the Musandam Peninsula, an Omani exclave cut off from the rest of the country by UAE territory – in practice it is roughly two hours by road from Dubai and a flight plus transfer from Muscat.
Every villa has a private pool. The entry Pool Villa is around 82 m² from roughly $1,416, the Pool Villa Beachfront and Pool Villa Suite Beachfront (125 m²) step up, and at the top sit The Retreat at around 1,121 m² and The Private Reserve at around 2,999 m².
The resort is built as a replica Omani village along the beach, and guests can arrive by road over the mountain, by boat across the bay, or by tandem paraglider from the ridge above – which is the detail people actually book it for.

Alila Jabal Akhdar
The highest-rated property in Oman and the hardest to actually get. Alila sits at about 2,000 m on the same Green Mountain as Anantara, and its private-pool product is exactly two Jabal Villas – 361 m², two bedrooms, a steam room and Jacuzzi in the master bathroom, and a private pool on the terrace that the resort confirms is exclusive to the villa, separate from its shared infinity pool.
Two things to know before you search. Booking.com sells it simply as "Villa" – the word Pool does not appear in the category name, and the room facilities don't list it either, so it looks like a non-pool villa on a quick scan. And at roughly $3,835 it is more than four times Anantara's entry rate for a comparable mountain setting.
With two units on the property, availability rather than price is the real constraint – if your dates are fixed, check Anantara first.

The Chedi Muscat has no private-pool category
Worth stating because it comes up in every Muscat search. The Chedi Muscat sells seven room and suite categories on Booking.com – Serai, Deluxe, Deluxe Club, Deluxe Club Terrace, Chedi Club Suite and Suite – and not one is a villa or carries a private pool. Its celebrated 103 m Long Pool is a shared resort pool, and a very good one.
It is an excellent hotel and the wrong answer to this particular question. For a private pool near the capital, Jumeirah Muscat Bay is the only confirmed option.
How to choose a region
Oman's four private-pool regions are genuinely separate trips, and the logistics decide more than the hotels do.
Jabal Akhdar is two hours from Muscat on a four-wheel-drive-only road, at an elevation where daytime temperatures run well below the coast. Anantara and Alila share the mountain.
Muscat is the only one you can do on a short trip – Jumeirah Muscat Bay is a drive from the airport, no domestic flight, no mountain permit.
Dhofar, in the far south, needs its own flight to Salalah and holds the two cheapest pool villas in the country. Al Baleed is 15 minutes from that airport; Alila Hinu Bay is an hour further at Mirbat.
Musandam is the outlier: an exclave reached through the UAE, which makes Six Senses Zighy Bay easier to combine with Dubai than with the rest of Oman. If you're already in the Emirates, that is a feature.
Elsewhere in the Gulf, Bahrain has the region's best-value all-villa property and Qatar is the closest comparison on scale.
When to go
October through April is the window for most of Oman – Jabal Akhdar, Muscat and Musandam are all comfortable then, and the mountain runs roughly 10–15 °C cooler than the coast thanks to elevation.
May to September is severe across the north, regularly above 40 °C, and it is when rates fall hardest.
Dhofar inverts the calendar. The khareef monsoon, roughly June to September, pulls mist and rain over Salalah and Mirbat and turns the hills green while the rest of the country bakes – which makes Al Baleed and Alila Hinu Bay Oman's summer answer rather than a season to avoid. It is also Dhofar's busy season, so book earlier than you would for the north.
Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the main gateway. Jabal Akhdar is about two hours by road from there, Salalah needs a domestic flight, and Musandam is usually reached overland from Dubai.
