Six Senses Zighy Bay
Six Senses Zighy Bay is built like a traditional Omani village along a beach at the tip of the Musandam Peninsula, an exclave separated from the rest of Oman by UAE territory. All 82 villas include a private pool: the entry Pool Villa has a 21 sqm infinity-edge pool, the Pool Villa Suite steps up to 24 sqm, and The Private Reserve – the largest villa of its type in the Middle East – has four bedrooms and its own 17-meter infinity pool.
Guests can arrive by road, by boat across Zighy Bay, or via a paragliding descent from the mountain above, one of the resort's signature arrivals. Snorkeling with sea turtles directly off the beach is a regular guest highlight.
The peninsula's isolation is both the appeal and the friction point – it takes roughly 2 hours from Dubai by road, or a domestic flight to Khasab plus a transfer from Muscat.
Alila Jabal Akhdar
Alila Jabal Akhdar has the highest confirmed Booking.com score in Oman, perched more than 6,500 feet up on Green Mountain in the Al Hajar range. Its private-pool product is narrow but genuine: only two Jabal Villas exist across the 78-room property, each a 361 sqm two-bedroom layout with a private terrace and pool, plus a steam room and Jacuzzi in the master bathroom.
Because there are only two of these villas, availability is the main constraint rather than price – book well ahead for specific dates. The rest of the resort's rooms share the property's expansive infinity pool and heated indoor pool rather than having a private one.
Jabal Akhdar sits about 2 hours inland from Muscat, sharing the mountain with neighboring Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar.
Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort
Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar sits on the same Green Mountain as Alila, two hours inland from Muscat, with 33 private pool villas alongside its 82 canyon-view rooms. Garden Pool Villas face the resort's internal gardens, while Cliff Pool Villas sit directly on the canyon edge – guests can swim to the infinity edge of their own pool and look straight down into the gorge below.
One-, two- and three-bedroom configurations are available, described as Oman's most luxurious three-bedroom pool villa product. This is not an adults-only property, so families and children are present around the shared pool and restaurants, unlike some of Oman's other luxury resorts.
Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara
Al Baleed Resort Salalah sits between a private beach and a freshwater lagoon in Oman's southern Dhofar region, described as the first and only luxury pool-villa resort in Salalah. 88 villas include a temperature-controlled private pool, from the entry One-Bedroom Garden View Pool Villa up to the Three-Bedroom Royal Beach Villa.
Salalah is climatically distinct from the rest of Oman – the region catches the annual khareef monsoon (roughly June–September), turning the surrounding hills green when the rest of the country is desert. Salalah International Airport is a 15-minute drive from the resort, separate from Muscat and requiring its own domestic or international flight connection.
When to go
October–April is the most comfortable window for Oman's mountain resorts (Jabal Akhdar) and the Musandam coast, with daytime temperatures on Green Mountain notably cooler than the lowlands – sometimes 10-15°C lower than Muscat given the elevation. Summer (May–September) brings extreme heat to most of the country, but Salalah is the exception: its khareef monsoon season (roughly June–September) brings cooling mist, rain and green hillsides, making it Oman's best summer escape rather than a season to avoid. Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the main gateway; Jabal Akhdar's two resorts are roughly a 2-hour drive, Musandam requires a separate exclave crossing or domestic flight, and Salalah needs its own flight connection. For a Middle East villa alternative closer to a major international hub, see Dubai.
