Phuket or Krabi for island trips?

Krabi, if you are choosing on the day itself. The Phi Phi crossing is only marginally shorter than from Phuket, but Ao Nang's pier is at the end of the beach rather than an hour's drive across an island, so a Krabi day runs seven to seven and a half hours against Phuket's ten. Krabi is also cheaper and quieter. Phuket has the bigger menu – the Similans, Racha diving, more nightlife – and better flight connections.

What is there to do in Krabi when it rains?

Kayaking at Ao Thalane is the strongest answer – it runs on sheltered tidal water inside mangrove channels and limestone canyons that an open-sea swell never reaches, so it goes ahead on days the island boats are cancelled. The freshwater Klong Root lagoon is the other paddle, and the Emerald Pool and hot springs at Khlong Thom are the inland option, about 90 minutes from Ao Nang each way with a 400-baht entry fee.

Why are there two different national park fees in Krabi?

The 4 Islands tour and Phi Phi sit in Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, 400 baht per foreign adult. The Hong Islands are in a separate park, Than Bok Khorani, 300 baht. Both are paid in cash, Thai baht only, on the day, and the ticket is per day – doing two trips on separate days means paying twice.

Can you dive from Krabi?

Yes. Dive centers in Ao Nang run day trips to the Phi Phi wall dives and the Bida Islands, advanced days out to the King Cruiser wreck and Shark Point, and PADI courses from Open Water up. Ao Nang's diving is run by independent PADI centers in town that collect from your hotel rather than resort dive operations, though Koh Lanta and Phi Phi have dive resorts. First-timers can do a supervised Discover Scuba day without a certification.

How do you get from Ao Nang to Railay Beach?

By shared longtail from Ao Nang beach, 10 to 15 minutes for 100 baht one way. The boats have no timetable – they leave once about eight passengers are aboard – and the boat club's posted hours are 08:00 to 18:00, with the fare rising to 150 baht after dark. Railay has no road, so a boat is the only way in, and you wade to board at both ends.
