Water Activities in Phuket

6 guidesUpdated August 2026

Phuket's water days run in two directions: into Phang Nga Bay for James Bond Island and the sea caves – the trip to book, and the one that still runs in bad weather – and out to Phi Phi and the Similan Islands. Phi Phi tours all put Maya Bay in the title even though you cannot swim there and it closes seasonally; the Similans sit behind a five-month park closure and a two-hour drive north to Khao Lak. Racha Yai is the year-round dive day, no certification needed.

One island day → James Bond Island by longtail, for the sea caves. Big-name snorkeling → Phi Phi. The best reef, dry season only → the Similan Islands. Never dived → Racha Yai. A dark night on the water → the bioluminescent plankton canoe.

James Bond Island from Phuket: the Rock, the Rules and the Better Half of the Day

The needle rock in Phang Nga Bay earned its nickname from a 1974 Bond film, and you view it from a beach rather than set foot on it. Why the sea caves are the real reason to book, and how the longtail and big-boat tours differ.

Phi Phi Islands Day Trips from Phuket: What the Maya Bay Rules Change

Bioluminescent Plankton in Phang Nga Bay: Book the Dark Nights

Similan Islands from Phuket: Five Months Closed, and a 100 km Head Start

The Similan Islands sit behind a five-month park closure and a two-hour drive north before you even board a boat. What the season, the pier and the early-bird pickup actually mean.

Phuket Sunset Cruise to Phang Nga Bay: What the Premium Actually Buys

FAQ

Water activities in Phuket

The James Bond Island longtail and sea-canoe tour – you view the needle rock from a beach, but the sea caves you paddle into are the real product, and longtail boats carry fewer people than the big tour boats.
