Which Koh Phangan private pool villa should you book?

If you want certainty, book Anantara Rasananda. All 64 of its villas and suites include a private plunge pool – there's no category to hunt for – and it sits directly on Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach. If you're traveling as a group or a family, book Pahili – its villas run to four bedrooms. If the view decides it, book Panviman's clifftop Pool Villa. If you want 115 m² of villa for two, book Santhiya's Hideaway or Sea View Pool Villa.

Panviman Resort Koh Phangan

Panviman sits on the headland separating Thong Nai Pan Noi from Thong Nai Pan Yai, and its entry private-pool category is the Pool Villa – listed on Booking as "Pool Villa with Private Pool", roughly 50 m², with its own pool and a view down the valley and across the bay.

The position is the whole proposition and also the catch. You get a panoramic view no beachfront room can offer, and you pay for it in stairs – guests consistently note that reaching the sand means a walk down a hill and a path through other bungalows, and that the resort doesn't have the direct beach frontage its neighbors do. There's a cliffside restaurant, an infinity pool that runs into the horizon, and the Viman Spa.

Then the room chart. Four Panviman categories carry a private pool on Booking: the Pool Villa, the Pool Villa Grande, the Executive Suite and the Presidential Pool Suite. The Grand Deluxe and Grand Family Villas have a spa bath instead. Book this one if the view matters more than beach access. Santhiya Koh Phangan Resort and Spa

Santhiya is the space play for two. Its Sea View Pool Villa is a 115 m² standalone unit with a separate living area, one double bedroom, a private pool on its own patio, a day bed and an outdoor bathtub. It caps at three adults, or two adults and two children. The Hideaway Pool Villa is the same size with a garden view, and it's the cheaper way in.

The resort around it runs to 99 rooms across 18 acres of teak-wood buildings and tropical landscaping, with the Ayurvana Spa and two restaurants. Access is by boat: scheduled or private speedboat from Santhiya Samui Pier, with shared crossings taking about 30 minutes.

Two things to hold in mind. The Sea View Pool Villa has a partial sea view, not a full one. And Booking lists a private pool only for the Pool Villas – the Pool Suites and Pool Access rooms don't show one. For a family, the Royal Grand Pool Villa, at about 197 m², sleeps four. Book this one if you need the space for two. Check Santhiya rates – name the Hideaway or Sea View Pool Villa specifically.

Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas

Rasananda is the most complete private-pool product on Koh Phangan. It sits directly on Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach, and all 64 villas and suites include a private plunge pool as standard – from the entry Pool Suite up through the Lagoon and Garden Pool Villas. There's no premium tier to reach for, because the pool isn't the premium.

The rate is the other thing to know. Rasananda opens around $500 for the entry Pool Suite, the highest of the four here – and it buys certainty as well as the villa.

Plan the transfer, because it's a real cost. The resort runs scheduled shared speedboats from its own pier lounge on Koh Samui, priced per person, and they land you on the beach. The alternative is the ferry to Thong Sala, then a private car the resort can book, about 30 minutes on a winding road. Book this one if you want the pool guaranteed and the price knowable. Pahili Pool Villas Koh Phangan

The group booking, and the only one off Thong Nai Pan. Pahili opened in 2024 at Mae Haad on the northwest coast, and it's built as a pool-villa property rather than a resort with a pool-villa tier: every villa has its own private pool. There's no category to decode here either.

What makes it different from the other three is the shape of the accommodation. Villas run from one to four bedrooms, with full kitchens, and the largest – including a four-bedroom sea-view villa – look out over the bay toward Koh Ma, the islet joined to Mae Haad by a sandbar. That makes it the one property on this list that works for a group traveling together rather than a couple.

Two practical notes. It's a short drive from the sand rather than on it, sitting above Mae Haad and Salad beaches, and the property asks for a damage deposit of THB 10,000 on arrival – normal for villa stays, but worth budgeting. Why three of the four sit on the same bay

Three hotels, one bay. That isn't a shortlist artifact – it's where Koh Phangan put its luxury.

The island has a reputation problem it has spent two decades managing. Haad Rin, at the southern end, is the Full Moon Party beach, and everything built around it is priced and designed for that crowd. The resorts that wanted a different guest went as far from it as the island allows, and Thong Nai Pan on the northeast coast is about as far as you get – two linked bays reached by a winding road or a boat, with no through traffic and nothing to walk to at night.

That isolation is the product. It also shapes the room charts: these are small, largely independent resorts on a hard-to-reach bay, and Panviman and Santhiya mix pool villas with rooms that have no pool. Anantara Rasananda, the one international brand in the bay, keeps it simple with a pool in every unit.

Pahili is the first real crack in that pattern. Building pool villas at Mae Haad in 2024 put the category on the opposite, northwestern side of the island, near the Thong Sala ferry rather than an hour's drive beyond it. One property isn't a trend, but it does mean the answer to "where are the pool villas" is no longer just one bay.

The practical version: on this island you're still choosing a bay before a hotel. Choose Thong Nai Pan and the shortlist is three; choose convenience and it's Pahili. For a bigger island with more choice on the same Gulf coast, Koh Samui's private pool villas sit a ferry ride away. On the Andaman side, Phuket has the deepest selection in Thailand and Krabi and Phang Nga add two boat-only resorts. Bali is the region's other big villa market.

When to go

Koh Phangan runs on a different calendar from the Andaman coast. The Gulf side's driest, most reliable stretch is roughly January through September, while October and November bring the heaviest rain – the inverse of Phuket and Krabi.

December through April is the most popular window, combining good weather with high-season rates, and it's the one that matters if you're reading this in advance: villa inventory across these four is thin – 64 units at Rasananda, a small property at Pahili, and only part of the room chart at the other two – and December fills first. There's no airport on Koh Phangan. Most travelers fly into Koh Samui or Surat Thani and take a ferry, anywhere from 30 minutes to about two hours depending on the pier and route, with the Thong Nai Pan hotels typically arranging the transfer from the pier themselves.
