The nickname is earned: Ko Tapu, the limestone needle in Phang Nga Bay, appeared as Scaramanga's island hideout in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. What the tour listings leave out is that you never land on it. Boats put you ashore on the neighboring beach at Khao Phing Kan and you look across at the rock – which is why the sea caves earlier in the day, not the film location, are what people talk about afterward.
The Bond connection, accurately
Ko Tapu is a limestone stack roughly 20 m high standing in the water just off Khao Phing Kan, a small island inside Ao Phang Nga National Park northeast of Phuket. In The Man with the Golden Gun, released in 1974, it stood in as the hideout of the villain Scaramanga, played by Christopher Lee opposite Roger Moore's Bond. The film is the entire reason the place carries an English nickname and appears on every Phuket excursion board.
The two names are not the same thing, and it matters for what you can do there. Ko Tapu is the needle rock; Khao Phing Kan is the island with the beach. Tour boats land at Khao Phing Kan, and approaching or landing on Ko Tapu itself is not permitted – the limestone base is eroding and the park protects it. So the visit is a beach stop with a view, on a small strip of sand shared with every other boat that arrived in the same hour.
Set your expectations there and the day works. Arrive expecting a private moment with a film location and you will be the person on the boat who is disappointed.
The sea caves are the real product
The best hour of a Phang Nga Bay trip has nothing to do with cinema. The bay is a drowned karst landscape: hundreds of limestone towers with collapsed interiors, hollow centers open to the sky, and cave mouths that only clear at certain tides. You get inside them by canoe, because nothing bigger fits.
On the longtail tour above, the canoeing happens around Koh Panak and Talu Island, where guides paddle you through low cave passages into hongs – enclosed lagoons inside the rock, walled by cliff on every side and reachable no other way. You lie back to clear the cave roof on the way in. It is the part of the day that is genuinely unlike anywhere else.
Worth knowing before you book: on most Phang Nga canoe tours a guide paddles the canoe for you rather than handing you a paddle. That is a feature if you want to look up at the cave ceiling and a disappointment if you booked expecting to work. Check the listing wording if paddling yourself is the point.
The day usually also includes Koh Panyee, a fishing village built on stilts over the water against a cliff, inhabited since the 18th century, where the buffet lunch is served.
Longtail or big boat
Two tours cover the same bay at different scales, and the cheaper one is the busier one.

Book the longtail at around $54. The eight-dollar difference is not what you are choosing between. A longtail sits low and open, gets closer to the rock walls, and carries a group small enough that the canoe transfers happen quickly instead of in rotations. It is also the version travelers rate more highly, which on a route this heavily sold is a meaningful signal.
Book the big boat at around $46 if you are traveling with people who will not enjoy a small open hull for ten hours – children, anyone prone to seasickness, or a group that wants shade and a toilet more than proximity. The bay is calm enough that the big boat is not a hardship, and you see the same islands.
Why this is the bad-weather day
Phang Nga Bay is enclosed water. Islands, headlands and the mainland break the swell on almost every side, so the bay stays workable in conditions that make the open Andaman unpleasant.
That makes James Bond Island the right call when the forecast is poor. If you have one boat day and the sea is up, this trip goes ahead comfortably while an open-water crossing to Phi Phi turns into an hour of being thrown around. It also runs year-round, with no seasonal park closure of the kind that shuts Maya Bay every August and September.
Departures leave from Ao Por Pier on Phuket's northeast coast, typically with hotel pickup around 07:00 and a full day of about ten hours. Ao Por is close to the northern and eastern beaches and a long drive from Kata or Karon, so factor the road time if you are staying on the west coast.
Where it fits in a Phuket week
Phuket's six water days go in different directions and do not substitute for each other. This one is east, sheltered, and about limestone by daylight – the same bay also runs as a luxury sunset cruise for the evening light and a bioluminescent plankton night canoe after dark, but pick one of the three, not two, since the stops overlap. South, the Phi Phi Islands day trip is open-water snorkeling and beaches, with Maya Bay closed for two months a year.
