Two completely different products are sold as a Cancún jet ski. One is a 30-minute rental that keeps you inside the Nichupté Lagoon doing loops. The other is a two-hour guided run through the mangroves, out through the channel into the Caribbean, and on to a reef for half an hour of snorkeling. Same search term, same city, and the gap between them is the whole decision.
Lagoon rental or reef tour?
This is the only question that matters, and the listings do not make it obvious.

For $10 more before fees, the two-hour tour buys you roughly four times the water and a reef stop. That is the honest recommendation for most people. A half-hour lagoon rental makes sense if you are squeezing it between other things, or if you specifically want to open the throttle without a group to keep pace with.
The guided tour breaks down as about 45 minutes riding out through the mangrove channels and coastal water, 30 minutes snorkeling, and 45 minutes back to Marina del Rey.
El Meco is a fourth reef
Worth knowing if you are booking more than one water day in Cancún: this tour snorkels El Meco, north of the hotel zone, and that is a different site from the ones the other boats use.

So stacking two of these in one trip does not mean seeing the same coral twice. The snorkeling here is a genuine half hour rather than a token dip, which is more water time than the big Isla Mujeres catamaran gives you on a ten-hour day.
The safety reality, stated plainly
The Nichupté Lagoon is busy, and jet ski collisions there are a real and recurring problem – it is one of the most common things people search about Cancún jet skis. The water carries speedboat convoys, kayak groups, waverunners and tour boats at once, and visibility around mangrove bends is poor. Stay with your guide, keep the spacing they set, and never assume open water is empty. The same lagoon also holds crocodiles, so do not enter the water anywhere except at the supervised reef stop.
None of that makes the activity unreasonable – it makes it an activity with rules, run in shared water. The guided tour format helps here, because a group with a lead rider moving at a set pace is meaningfully safer than a free rental in the same lagoon.
What is included and what is not
Included: the jet ski, a guide, snorkeling gear for the reef stop, and a small-group format capped at 10 participants.
Not included: a $20 docking fee per person, cash only at the marina. Budget $90 all-in. Check-in is 30 minutes before departure.
Riding arrangements: you can book a shared ski (two people) or your own. Solo bookers are paired with the guide or another participant, so do not assume booking one place gets you a machine to yourself – confirm if that matters.
Minimum age is 12, which is higher than most Cancún water activities and rules this out for younger families. The listing does not mention any licence requirement, and lagoon operators here generally provide instruction rather than asking for one.
Three ways to be on the same lagoon
Nichupté carries three completely different products, and Cancún sells all of them to the same visitor.

The jet ski is the most expensive of the three and the only one that reaches open sea. The speedboat is the better value if the appeal is driving. The kayak is the only one where you will see anything alive that is not a fish.
When to go
November to April is the dry season, with calmer water in the channel and the open-sea leg. The lagoon section is sheltered year-round, but the run outside is exposed, and that is where a windy day is felt.
Book a morning slot. Lagoon traffic builds through the day, which matters more here than on most activities given the collision risk, and the reef stop is clearer before the afternoon chop.
Summer runs hot with the hurricane window from June to November. Operators cancel the open-sea leg in rough conditions, so check what happens to your booking if they shorten the route.
