Maya Bay closes to visitors from 1 August to 30 September every year, and for the rest of the year you can wade in but not swim. Phi Phi day trips from Phuket run straight through the closure regardless, because the other stops – Bamboo Island, Pileh Lagoon, the limestone cliffs of Phi Phi Leh – never shut. So the decision is which boat you get on, not whether the famous beach is open.
Maya Bay is closed right now, and that is normal
Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh is closed to landings from 1 August to 30 September each year, along with neighboring Loh Samah Bay, under the Department of National Parks' management of Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. The break falls in the southwest monsoon and exists to let the reef, the beach and the coastal vegetation recover from a high season that brings thousands of people a day. It has been an annual fixture rather than a one-off since the bay's long closure and staged reopening.
This is the single most useful thing to know before you book. A Phi Phi tour sold for late August or September still runs – it simply skips the Maya landing. Operators rarely rename the product for those two months, so a listing can carry "Maya Bay" in the title on a date when nobody is being put ashore there. If your entire reason for going is that beach, travel in the other ten months. If you want a day on the Andaman among limestone islands, the closure costs you one stop out of five or six.
The reopening is 1 October in a normal year, and the dry season that follows – roughly November to April – is when the sea is calmest and the underwater visibility is worth the snorkel.
Even when it is open, you cannot swim at Maya Bay
Since the bay reopened under new rules, the visit works nothing like the one in the photographs. Boats no longer enter Maya Bay from the front. They dock at Loh Samah Bay behind the island, at a concrete pontoon with a national park booth, and passengers walk through on a raised boardwalk and short nature trail to reach the beach.
Once you are there, swimming is prohibited – wading to knee depth is the limit, and rangers enforce it. Time ashore is capped at around an hour. The rules protect the sandy shallows where juvenile blacktip reef sharks live, which is also why the water off the beach looks so undisturbed compared to any other stop on the route.
Read that as an argument for the rest of the itinerary rather than against the trip. The snorkeling on a Phi Phi day happens at Pileh Lagoon, off Bamboo Island and around the Phi Phi Leh cliffs – not at Maya Bay, where it is illegal.
The two tours worth comparing
The Phi Phi market from Phuket is enormous and mostly undifferentiated: the same handful of stops, the same pier, a different hull. Two products are worth putting side by side.

Book the $40 buffet trip unless you have a specific reason not to. On a route this standardized, the enormous booking volume is the product feature: it means several departures a day, a fleet that keeps running when one boat has a problem, and a rebooking desk that has handled your exact situation a thousand times. On a $40 ticket in a market with hundreds of operators, reliability is worth more than a marginally better lunch.
Book the roughly $100 premium version if crowding is the thing that ruins days out for you. That is a real preference, not a snobbish one – Phi Phi in January is genuinely busy, and paying two and a half times the fare to be on a less-loaded boat with a seated lunch is a defensible trade. Confirm the group size on the listing before you pay, because "premium" is a marketing word and the boat capacity is the number that decides your day.
What the day actually contains
Boats for Phi Phi leave from Rassada Pier on Phuket's east coast, with typical morning departures and a full day of roughly ten hours door to door. The crossing to the Phi Phi group takes under an hour by speedboat.
A standard itinerary works through Phi Phi Leh – the uninhabited southern island with the cliffs, Pileh Lagoon and the Viking Cave – then lands for lunch on Phi Phi Don, the inhabited one, before finishing at Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Phai) to the northeast. Bamboo Island stays open all year and holds the best straightforward swimming beach on the route. Monkey Beach is a common add-on stop; treat the monkeys as wildlife rather than a photo op.
Stops move around between operators and between seasons, so read the specific listing for the day you want rather than assuming this order. What does not change is the shape: two or three snorkel stops, one lunch, one beach, and a lot of boat time.
When to go
November to April is the dry season and the right answer for a Phi Phi day trip – calm sea, good visibility, low rain chance, and Maya Bay open. It is also the crowded, expensive window, which is why the premium option exists.
May to July still works. The southwest monsoon builds through it, the sea gets rougher and afternoon rain is common, but Maya Bay is open until 31 July and prices soften. August and September are the two months when the headline stop is off the table entirely.
The other Phuket water days
Phuket sells six water days worth separating rather than stacking, because they go in different directions and different lights. Phi Phi is the southern one.
