Search for a Cancún sunset cruise and you are probably picturing a quiet catamaran and a glass of something cold. That boat exists here, but it barely registers on the booking platforms – the best-reviewed evening cruise in Cancún is an adults-only party boat with DJs, and the best-reviewed sunset trip of any kind is not a boat at all. Knowing that before you book saves you the wrong evening.
What actually sails at sunset here

Then the answer in Cancún is not a boat. The highest-reviewed sunset trip in the city is the mangrove kayak, which runs a sunset departure on the Nichupté Lagoon for less than half the price of the party cruise.
The lagoon faces west toward the mainland, so you paddle into the light rather than watching it over your shoulder – it is geographically the better sunset in Cancún, which most visitors never realize because they are looking east at the Caribbean from their hotel.
It is two hours, silent, and there is no bar. If your picture of a sunset cruise was mostly about calm water and good light rather than drinks, that is the trip, and it is the one the reviews actually support.
If you specifically want a dinner catamaran, book it – just go in knowing you are relying on the operator's own material rather than a body of verified reviews, and check the cancellation terms carefully.

The all-day catamaran is far cheaper and sails home around sunset, which is why people confuse the two. But it is a day trip to an island that happens to end at dusk, not an evening cruise. If you want a full day out and do not mind that the sunset is the tail end of it, that trip is much better value. If you want three hours in the evening and nothing else, this is the one.
What to bring
A $10 docking fee is collected in cash at check-in, and the operator requires ID or a passport to board. Outside food and drink are not permitted. Bring cash for the fee and tips, and photo ID – people get turned away at the dock for arriving without it, which is an expensive way to learn.
