Victoria House Resort and Spa
The boutique benchmark. Victoria House sits on the beach south of San Pedro Town, with 42 rooms and a set of named beachfront villas – Casa Playa Blanca, Casa Del Sol and Casa Azul – right on the sand. The standard rooms sit back in the gardens.
It has infinity pools, a large spa and its own dock, where snorkel trips leave for the reef. It isn't all-inclusive. Breakfast comes with the room, and breakfast-and-dinner or full-board plans cost extra.

Xanadu Island Resort
The eco pick. Xanadu is the first Green Globe island-certified property in Belize, a mile south of San Pedro Town. Its 20 condo-style suites sit inside five dome buildings, set in native gardens on the beach.
Suites come with kitchens. It suits couples and small families who'd rather cook some meals than eat out every night.

Ramon's Village Resort
The classic San Pedro beach resort. Ramon's has 61 palm-thatched cabanas, styled after Bora Bora's cottages, directly on the beach and a short walk from town. There's a lagoon-style pool and a beach spa in a thatched palapa.
Divers get the most out of it. Ramon's Village Divers runs its own fleet out to the reef and the atolls beyond.

Grand Caribe Belize
The group booking. Grand Caribe sits 2 miles north of San Pedro on about 850 feet of beachfront, with a pier. Every unit is a residence – one to four bedrooms, with full kitchens and balconies.
It has six pools and two hot tubs, beachfront dining and a spa. Airport transfers to San Pedro's airstrip are included.

SunBreeze Hotel
The budget answer. SunBreeze sits on the beach in San Pedro Town, next to the airstrip. You'll hear the occasional small plane. You'll also walk everywhere.
There's a pool with a poolside bar, Blue Water Grill for dinner and Shalom Day Spa on site. Rooms are simpler than the resorts south of town.

Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection
The big-resort option. Alaia is the first Marriott property in Belize, on 1,000 feet of Mar de Tumbo beach in San Pedro. It has three pools, including a rooftop pool, plus a spa and several restaurants and bars.
Rooms range from Vista Studios and Suites near the main pool to Reef House Suites and three-bedroom Beachfront Villas with plunge pools.

Almond Beach Resort at Jaguar Reef
The mainland pick. Almond Beach sits on the long beach at Hopkins, a Garifuna fishing village on Belize's southern coast. It has a heated infinity pool with a swim-up bar, and Deluxe Suites come with their own plunge pool.
Evenings are relaxed. Dinner is at The Paddle House, and drinks are at The Big Dock, a bar out over the water. It sells all-inclusive packages, which is rarer in Belize than you'd expect.

Also worth knowing: Placencia and a private island
Mariposa Belize Beach Resort is the Placencia option. It sits a mile from Placencia Village, steps from the Caribbean, with five oceanfront suites and twelve treehouses. It's small and quiet. Check Mariposa rates.
Coco Plum Island Resort is the all-inclusive most people mean when they ask about Belize. It's an adults-only private island off Dangriga, with 21 cabanas on the beach and packages covering meals, local drinks and transfers. Caye or mainland: where to stay in Belize
Belize's beachfront splits three ways. Ambergris Caye is reef, dive boats and San Pedro's bars. Placencia is a long, thin peninsula with quieter beaches. Hopkins is a village on the mainland, close to the jungle and ruins.
For a first trip, pick the caye. If you're unsure, Victoria House is the one that gets the caye right.

When to go
The dry season runs roughly February through May, and December and January are usually dry and cooler too. That's the winter-escape window most travelers book, and rates peak over Christmas and in February–March.
Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August into October. Sargassum seaweed can also wash up on the beaches, usually worst from spring into summer.
