Which overwater room should you book?
There is one category and nine rooms of it, so the real decision is whether St. Lucia is the right island for the trip at all. Book the Overwater Honeymoon Butler Bungalow if the setting is what you are buying. Sandals Grande St. Lucian sits on its own peninsula with water on three sides, the jetty runs out into Rodney Bay, and no other overwater room in the Caribbean has this particular outlook.
Book somewhere else if a private pool on the deck is non-negotiable – because St. Lucia does not have one, and neither does the resort most guides send you to instead.

Sandals Grande St. Lucian
The location does most of the work here. The resort occupies the Pigeon Island causeway peninsula at Gros-Islet, so the sea is on three sides, and the nine bungalows sit on a wooden walkway running out over Rodney Bay rather than tucked into a sheltered basin. It is a 311-room resort, couples-only, all-inclusive, with five pools, a dozen restaurants and a complimentary round-trip airport shuttle from Hewanorra.
The Overwater Honeymoon Butler Bungalow is the only overwater category, coded OWB, one king bed, maximum two guests. What Sandals lists on it: glass floor panels with lit water so the reef stays visible after dark, a private outdoor Tranquility Soaking Tub for two, an over-water hammock, a private outdoor shower, a terrace, an in-room bar with premium liquors, and Butler Elite service.
What is not on that list is a pool. Sandals' own overwater brand page draws the line explicitly: the bungalows get glass floors, a soaking tub and a hammock, and "the villas feature a private infinity pool." St. Lucia sells a bungalow. The amenity list for OWB carries a Soaking Tub icon and no Private Pool icon, which is the same test that separates the two Jamaica categories.
Rates run from roughly $2,000 per person per night all-inclusive – Sandals quotes per person, so double it for the couple's nightly figure, and it covers meals, premium drinks, watersports, activities and the butler. Airport transfers are included with this category; spa treatments are not.
Book this one if you want the most dramatic overwater setting in the Caribbean and a soaking tub is enough. Check Sandals Grande St. Lucian dates – nine rooms is the entire national supply, and February in particular goes months ahead.
Several 2026 roundups now say these bungalows have a private plunge pool. Sandals' own room page does not – it lists a Tranquility Soaking Tub, a hammock and a glass floor. Confirm the amenity list on sandals.com before you pay a pool premium.
Which Sandals overwater rooms actually have a private pool?
One, and it is not in St. Lucia. Sandals runs five overwater categories across four resorts, and the split is clean once you read the room type rather than the marketing:
- Overwater Private Island Butler Villa with Infinity Pool – Sandals Caribbean Cay, Montego Bay, Jamaica. Private infinity pool. The only one.
- Overwater Private Island Butler Honeymoon Bungalow – Sandals Caribbean Cay, Jamaica. Soaking tub, no pool.
- Overwater Honeymoon Butler Bungalow – Sandals Grande St. Lucian, St. Lucia. Soaking tub, no pool.
- Blue Mahoe Overwater Butler Villa – Sandals South Coast, Jamaica. Soaking tub, no pool, despite the word villa in the name.
- Vincy Overwater Two-Story Villa – Sandals Saint Vincent. Soaking tub, no pool.
Two things follow. The word villa in a Sandals room name does not guarantee a pool – Blue Mahoe and Vincy both carry it and neither has one. And the only Sandals overwater room with a private pool is currently shut: Sandals Caribbean Cay, the rebranded and rebuilt Sandals Royal Caribbean, reopens on 18 December 2026 as part of a $200 million reimagination after Hurricane Melissa. Sandals Saint Vincent: the bigger room, not the pool
The standard advice – go to St. Vincent if you want a pool over the water – does not hold up. The Vincy Overwater Two-Story Villa at Sandals Saint Vincent, Buccament Bay, has a Tranquility Soaking Tub and no private pool, exactly like St. Lucia. St. Vincent's private plunge pools are on its land villas, not on the water.
What St. Vincent actually gives you is space and price. The Vincy villa is 1,248 sq ft over two stories, set in a private cove, with a day bed suspended above the water and a dedicated second-floor deck for the view – roughly twice the room of a St. Lucia bungalow, and the cheapest entry rate of any Sandals overwater category. The cost is connectivity. St. Lucia has established direct service from several US and Canadian gateways and a mature dive and excursion scene; St. Vincent is newer to long-haul tourism and usually needs a connection.
Booking the bungalow
One practical note that changes how you use the links on this page. The overwater category at Sandals books direct through sandals.com or a Sandals specialist. The resort itself is listed on Booking.com and Expedia, and the CTAs here reach that listing – useful for comparing the resort, checking dates and seeing what the property is like – but the nine overwater bungalows are not sold through those channels. Expect to finish the overwater booking on Sandals' own site.
That also means there is no third-party guest score for the bungalow tier specifically. Any rating you see attaches to the 311-room resort as a whole.
If the soaking tub settles it and the setting is what you want, start with the resort listing and move to Sandals for the OWB category. When to go
The dry season runs mid-December to mid-May, and January through April is the peak window for the overwater tier – steady trade winds, low rainfall and the clearest water in Rodney Bay. The week around Valentine's Day is the single hardest date to get: nine rooms, and honeymooners booking a year out.
November and early December are the value months. Conditions are usually good, rates sit meaningfully below the January–April peak, and overwater availability is far more flexible.
June to November is the wet and hurricane season. St. Lucia's position in the Windward Islands means direct hits are statistically less common than further north, but the risk is real at this price point, and it is worth pricing travel insurance into the decision rather than treating the low rates as free money.
