Which Malta or Gozo private pool villa should you book?

Farmhouse Villa in Gozo with a Large Pool

This converted farmhouse in Għarb, on Gozo's western side, is the highest-rated confirmed private-pool property in this guide. The whole house is the booking unit: five bedrooms and five bathrooms across a 3,200+ sqft layout, wrapped around a 12m x 5m pool with a shallow end and a garden with outdoor seating.

That's the traditional Gozo villa holiday. A family or a group takes the entire farmhouse, and the pool belongs to that booking alone – no category to decode, no other guests. Ta' Pinu Basilica is a 13-minute walk, and the Cittadella in Victoria is about 3 miles by car.

Know what you're giving up. There's no daily housekeeping, no restaurant and no reception – you coordinate directly with the host, and it's 27 miles from Malta airport plus the Gozo ferry to get here. Tal-Barun Farmhouse

Tal-Barun is the same idea at couple scale: a smaller converted farmhouse in San Lawrenz, part of the Gozobreak Farmhouses collection, with two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a private outdoor pool and garden. At €180 it's the lowest confirmed entry price in this guide.

The location suits a slow week. It sits roughly 0.7 miles from Dwejra Bay, so the Inland Sea and the former Azure Window site are a short drive, and Gozo's west coast walking is on the doorstep. For five or more people the Għarb farmhouse works out cheaper per head – for two, this is the better-sized house.

The Duke Boutique Hotel

The Duke answers the one thing the farmhouses can't: hotel service, on Gozo, with a private pool. It sits in the middle of Victoria, next to Villa Rundle Gardens, and its 46 sqm Presidential Suite has a private heated pool on a terrace looking over Republic Street toward the Cittadella.

Here's the constraint that decides it. The Presidential Suite is the only category in the hotel with a private pool – one unit, in an otherwise standard boutique hotel. Where the farmhouses are the whole booking, this is a single room competing with every other traveler who wants it, so availability is thin and inflexible.

Mainland Malta: three hotel suites with a pool of their own

Mainland demand is smaller than Gozo's, and the format flips entirely: no whole-house rentals, just one confirmed suite category per hotel.

Iniala Harbour House

Iniala occupies four restored 17th-century Maltese townhouses on Valletta's harbor front, and it's the only Forbes Five-Star hotel in Malta. The Hideaway Harbour View Pool Suite runs across two levels, the upper one opening onto a rooftop terrace and private plunge pool over the Grand Harbour, looking at the Three Cities.

Above it, the Presidential Residence and Grand Residences also carry private plunge pools at a higher tier again. There's a Michelin-starred restaurant on site and Valletta's center is a short walk – this is the pick if the city, not the pool deck, is the point of the trip.

The Westin Dragonara Resort

The Westin sits on its own peninsula in St Julian's, Malta's resort and nightlife hub, and it's the largest property here. The category to ask for is the Luxury Bay Infinity Suite: 10 of the resort's 69 Luxury Bay Suites include a private pool and garden deck practically at the water's edge, over St George's Bay or open sea.

Read that ratio carefully – 59 of those 69 suites don't have the pool, and the names are close enough to confuse. It's about 20 minutes from Malta airport, with full resort dining and facilities: you're trading the Gozo farmhouses' exclusivity for scale and service.

Maritim Antonine Hotel and Spa

This is the practical base for a trip that wants both islands. Maritim Antonine is in the hillside village of Mellieħa in Malta's north, about 10 minutes from the Gozo ferry at Ċirkewwa – no other property here makes a Gozo day trip that easy.

Why Malta's private pools are farmhouses, not hotel rooms

Look at what's actually on this list. Three of the six confirmed stays are whole-property rentals on Gozo, and each mainland hotel manages exactly one private-pool category. That isn't a coincidence of sampling – it's what the two islands are.

Gozo's rural building stock did the work. Stone farmhouses with walled courtyards were already the right shape for a pool and a garden, so converting them into self-catering villas was a renovation rather than a construction project. Malta's hotels, built dense along the coast at Valletta and St Julian's, had no such land – a private pool there has to be carved out of a rooftop or a single waterfront suite.

When to go

April to June and September to October are Malta and Gozo's best months: warm enough to use a pool daily, without the peak heat and crowds of July and August, when temperatures regularly pass 32°C and Gozo's farmhouses book out weeks ahead.

November to March is mild by northern European standards but too cool for most travelers to get value from a private pool – that's a sightseeing trip, not a pool one.
