Los Cabos is a private-villa and boutique destination first, and its luxury properties sell water you do not share – which is a good product, and a different one. Three of the four genuine options are at the San José del Cabo end, within half an hour of the airport.

Which Los Cabos swim-up room should you book?

This is the pick, and it solves a problem no other resort in Los Cabos solves. The Club Swim-Up Master King Suite opens onto a pool that the resort enforces as 18 and over – but Hyatt Ziva itself is a family all-inclusive with a kids' club and a waterslide.

That combination matters more here than it would elsewhere, because Los Cabos makes you choose: adults-only resort or family resort, with nothing in between. Ziva is the in-between. A couple books the swim-up suite and swims in adult water; a family books it and still has the rest of the resort.

Position is the second argument. It sits on the San José del Cabo side, 20 minutes from SJD – the shortest transfer of the four, and roughly half the drive to Diamante.

Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf and Spa

Secrets is the highest-rated resort on this page and the one to book if you want no children anywhere at all. It is adults-only 18-plus, all-inclusive, with seven restaurants and a large spa, on the Sea of Cortez at Puerto Los Cabos.

Two swim-out tiers are confirmed. The Swimout Junior Suite comes in Garden View and Ocean View and opens directly onto a shared pool. Above it, the Preferred Club Junior Suite Swimout adds access to the Preferred Club pool – water shared among Club guests rather than the whole resort, which is the calmer of the two options.

Having two tiers is worth more than it sounds in a market this small. When one sells out for your week, the rest of Los Cabos usually has nothing to fall back on.

It is 30 minutes from SJD, ten more than Ziva, and at around $640 all-inclusive it is the highest rate here.

Dreams Los Cabos Suites Golf Resort and Spa

Dreams is the value pick and it has the most floor space on the page. Its swim-out suites run to 650 sq ft in both a two-double and a king configuration, each with a private terrace giving swim-out access to the pool – and there is a 1,080 sq ft version with a separate living room and direct swim-out access from its own terrace.

That is a lot of room for around $480 all-inclusive, the lowest rate here by $70, and the suites sleep families comfortably in a way the 33 m² rooms elsewhere in Los Cabos do not.

It sits at San José del Cabo, 25 minutes from SJD, with two pools, five restaurants and an adjacent golf course. It is the most dated property of the four and it rates accordingly – solid rather than sharp – so book it for the space and the price rather than for the finish.

Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos

Hard Rock is the Pacific-side option and the only one on this page that is not at the San José del Cabo end. The Deluxe Swim-Up King opens onto shared water in a resort with six pools, seven restaurants, a waterslide and a private beach, in the Diamante development west of Cabo San Lucas.

The appeal is the setting and the energy: this is the Pacific rather than the Sea of Cortez, the resort is loud by design, and it takes all ages.

Two honest notes. It carries one of the two lowest guest ratings of the four, level with Dreams, and at 45 minutes from SJD it is more than twice Hyatt Ziva's transfer. The Pacific here also has stronger surf than the Sea of Cortez side, so check swimming conditions rather than assuming the beach works like the photos.

Where "swim-up" means a private pool in Los Cabos

This is the section that matters most here, because Los Cabos has more properties selling private water under swim-up language than it has genuine shared-pool resorts.

Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas is the clearest case and the most searched. RIU's own description of its Junior Suite Swim-Up is a 33 m² room with a private pool on the terrace – guests describe it as a small splash pool directly in front of the suite, in the inner east and west wings facing the gardens. It is a nice room. It is not a swim-up room in the sense this guide uses, and the same is true of RIU's swim-up suites at Costa Mujeres on the other side of Mexico, so treat the brand's "Swim-Up" label as a private-pool signal rather than a shared-pool one.

Paradisus Los Cabos sells a Reserve Suite with a private pool per room. Nobu Hotel Los Cabos and Marquis Los Cabos both sell private plunge pools on the terrace. Grand Velas and Garza Blanca Los Cabos are private-pool properties too.

Which end of the corridor?

Los Cabos is two towns 45 km apart with the airport near one of them, and the drive is the single biggest practical difference between bookings here.
