This is the trip for a group that cannot agree. Two hours, three shallow reef stops close to town, a viewing panel in the hull and a sundeck above it – so the confident swimmers get in and the ones who would rather not can watch the same coral through glass with a cold drink. At around $35 it is also the cheapest way onto Cozumel's reef.
Which reefs you actually cross
The itinerary is close-in and shallow, which is the whole design – these are reefs a few minutes from the piers rather than the hour-long run south to Palancar.
- Villablanca, off the Garden Beach shore just north of the tour's base, is the first stop and typically the longest at around half an hour.
- Paraíso reef takes the next two stops, roughly 30 and 25 minutes. It is a shallow, fringing reef divided into sections that operators sell under English names – "Shallow Paradise" and "Deep Paradise" are simply Paraíso's inner and outer parts, not separate reefs.
So "three reefs" is really two named reefs across three stops. Both are genuinely shallow, which is exactly why a hull panel works over them and would show you nothing at all over Palancar's wall.
What a glass bottom really shows you
Worth setting expectations, because this is where these trips get bad reviews from people who expected an aquarium.
A hull panel gives you a letterbox view straight down through a few meters of water. On a calm, bright day over pale sand and coral heads it is genuinely good – fish, structure, color, all in real time and all without goggles. On a choppy afternoon, or with cloud overhead, it goes murky and green and you will wish you had booked the morning.
It is a window, not a screen. You see what is directly beneath the boat for as long as the boat is over it, which means the guide's job is to hold position over something worth looking at. The good operators do; that is most of what separates them.
Anyone who gets in the water sees more, and everyone on board knows it. The point of the format is that not getting in is a real option rather than a disappointment.

The glass-bottom trip wins on price, on time and on flexibility. It loses on reef quality – Villablanca and Paraíso are pleasant rather than remarkable, and the Palancar day is a different class of coral for $20 more.
The practical details
Boats leave from El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel, beside the Puerta Maya and International cruise piers and about 3 km south of downtown San Miguel – which makes this one of the easiest things on the island to fit into a port call. Meeting time is 30 minutes before departure.
Water, sodas and a snorkel tube are on board throughout, beer comes out after the snorkel stops, and the tube is yours to keep. Bring swimwear under your clothes, a towel, water shoes and cash.
The $11 pier and marine park fee is cash, per passenger, on the day. The operator also rules out pregnant travelers, wheelchair users and anyone with back or heart conditions – the boarding and the deck are not adapted.
When to go
Morning, always. This trip depends more on surface conditions than any other water activity in Cozumel, because everything you are paying for is a view down through the water column. Calm and bright is the difference between a good trip and a wasted one.
The operator refunds in full or reschedules if the trip is canceled for weather, which is a fair policy and worth knowing when you book a marginal-looking day.
November to April is the calmer season. Sargassum barely troubles this coast – Cozumel's west side is sheltered and these reefs sit off it.
