Thai resorts file the category under pool access, and once you search that term the island turns out to hold more of these rooms than anywhere else in Asia – from around $120 a night. Which Phuket pool access room should you book?
For a first trip, book JW Marriott Phuket. It has the only pool-access category on the island where the adjoining stretch of lagoon is kept adults-only by staff, and Mai Khao is 20 minutes from the airport – the shortest transfer of anything on this list. The rest of the decision is really about which beach you want, because the transfer times swing from 20 minutes to over an hour and the beaches are nothing alike.

JW Marriott Phuket
The Grande Premium Pool Access Room opens onto the resort's lagoon-style pool, and the north end of that lagoon is adults-only – not as a posted sign, but as a rule staff actually enforce. That is the thing nothing else on this island offers: a child-free swim from your own terrace at a resort that is otherwise built for families.
Mai Khao is the north-west coast, 20 minutes from HKT and roughly an hour from Patong. The beach is long, clean and thin on crowds – sea turtles nest on it – and there is very little to walk to. That is either the appeal or the deal-breaker, and it is worth deciding which before you book.

InterContinental Phuket Resort
Read this room description carefully before you book it. The Classic Pool Access Room is 41 m², ground floor, and the hotel's own copy describes "swim-up direct access to a semi-private wading pool" – a shallow shared pool for the row of rooms it fronts, not one of the resort's five main pools. It qualifies as swim-up. It is not a lap swim.
What you are paying for is the rest of the property: 221 rooms above Kamala Beach, five outdoor pools including an adults-only infinity pool, a free beach shuttle, and the service consistency the brand is bought for. Kamala is the quieter neighbor to Patong, about 10 km up the coast, and it works well for people who want a five-star base without the noise.
Entry rooms start well below the pool-access category; expect around $200 for the Classic Pool Access.

Grand Mercure Phuket Patong
Patong is where most first-time visitors end up and where almost no resort offers pool access. Grand Mercure is the exception, and at scale: 38 Deluxe Pool Access Rooms, 34 m² each, terraces stepping straight into the lagoon pools that wind through the property's 314 rooms.
The pitch is simple. You are a seven-minute walk from Patong Beach and inside walking distance of the bars and night market, but you swim from your door rather than fighting for a lounger. Three outdoor pools, a spa, and a kids' arcade mean it works for families too.
The cost is the transfer: around 60 minutes from HKT, since Patong sits on the far side of the island's hills.

Thavorn Palm Beach Resort
Thavorn is the one where the pool is genuinely the point. The Lagoon Pool Access Deluxe Terrace rooms open onto sprawling lagoon-shaped pools through sliding glass doors, and – uniquely on this list – you can swim from your terrace to a swim-up pool bar without touching dry land.
The setting is a mature tropical garden, so the pool terraces here are shaded in a way Phuket's newer resorts are not. There is a water park included with the room, 214 rooms in total, and Karon Beach is about a two-minute walk.
It is not a boutique property and some of it shows its age. That is reflected in the rate, which opens around $160.

Katathani Phuket Beach Resort
Katathani has the best beach on this list and it is not close. The resort occupies 850 m of Kata Noi, a small bay walled in by green hills, and effectively controls the whole thing – a rarity on an island where most beaches are public and crowded.
The Pool Access rooms sit in the newly renovated Bhuri Wing, 50 m², 34 of them, with a private terrace stepping into a shared pool. That is the largest pool-access room on this list by a wide margin, and it takes a king or twins plus a child. There are nine pools across the resort and a separate Family Pool Access category if you are traveling with young kids.
Kata Noi is the far south-west, around 70 minutes from the airport. Nothing about it is convenient, which is exactly why it stays quiet.

ACCESS Resort and Villas
The cheapest and the strangest. ACCESS is built so that every one of its 139 rooms has direct pool access – a network of five pools laid out like canals through the property, with water-level terraces and steps from the room. Staff deliver room service by rowed Thai boat, which sounds like a gimmick and is one, and is also genuinely fun.
Because pool access is the standard rather than the upgrade, the entry categories – Pool Access Blue Wing and Pool Access Green Wing – are the cheap rooms, opening around $120. Everywhere else on this list, the same feature is a paid step up.
The catch is the location: Karon, but a 15-minute walk inland from the beach rather than on it.

Why Phuket has so many of these rooms
Most swim-up destinations ration the category. In Cancún or Belek a resort might carry eight swim-up suites and price them as the top tier. Phuket does the opposite, and the reason is architectural.
Phuket's resorts are low-rise and sprawling, built around long lagoon-shaped pools that wind between garden blocks rather than a single rectangle behind the building. That geometry produces an enormous amount of ground-floor pool perimeter – which is why Grand Mercure carries 38 pool access rooms, Katathani 34, and ACCESS gives all 139 rooms pool access as standard.
The consequence for you is the useful part. Pool access here is a volume category, not a scarce one, so it prices like a mid-tier upgrade instead of a suite and it rarely sells out outside the December–January peak. You do not need to book eight months ahead. You do need to book the specific room code – the pool access rooms are the first thing to go at any given hotel, and a "Deluxe" booked by mistake puts you on the second floor.
If you are comparing across Asia, swim-up rooms in Bali use exactly the same "pool access" terminology and price in a similar band, while Koh Samui is Thailand's quieter, more resort-led alternative on the Gulf side. Further afield, Boracay is the closest comparison for a small-island version of the same thing.
One more central Patong option worth knowing about if Grand Mercure is full: Burasari Phuket has 40 m² Elite Pool Access rooms whose terrace steps lead into the resort's shared pool, with a swim-up pool bar in the same water. It is a boutique property rather than a big resort, and it sits a few streets back from the beach.
What to do beyond the pool
A pool access room covers the mornings; the water outside the resort covers the rest of the trip. Phi Phi Islands is the open-water beaches-and-snorkeling day, James Bond Island trades that for sheltered limestone and sea canoeing, and the same bay runs again as a sunset cruise and a bioluminescent plankton night canoe. For proper diving, Similan is the serious, seasonal option and Racha Yai the year-round one that needs no certification.
When to go
November through April is the dry season and the obvious window for a room that opens onto water. December and January are peak – highest rates, busiest pools, and the one period where booking early actually matters.
February through April is the sweet spot: still dry, still hot, noticeably cheaper and quieter than the Christmas run.
May to October is the southwest monsoon. The west-coast beaches on this list – Patong, Karon, Kata Noi, Kamala – take the brunt of it, with heavy afternoon rain and red-flag surf that closes swimming on some days. The pools stay open and the rates drop hard, so it is a real option if you are booking a pool room precisely because you plan to use the pool.
